MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Apple is aware of the complaints, and is investigating, per:

That's the thread I started. Having my hard drive replaced (with a Hitachi) solved the problem. Ultimately the tech said the HDD looked like it was experiencing mechanical failure.

how did you get your, over the phone with apple care or at genius bar and did you have to send ur mac away ???

The error that iRuney is having was different to the one we were having.

When the computer beachballs, it is waiting for something to happen, whether it's an infinite loop to finish (when it doesn't stop beachballing), or if it's waiting for the harddrive to read something.

The problem we're having is the entire computer locking up with no Beachball at all.

interesting, mine is doing the spinning beach-ball thing, is yours completely locking up requiring a hard reset ??

I Have also submitted a massive bug report about this problem as well.

The spinning beach ball issue is a completely different issue.

If you've got a Spinning Beachball issue, you should either take it to an apple shop or test things such as your Ram and Hard Disk. The Spinning Beachball thing is a much simpler issue as the computer is just waiting for something to happen (like for data to be grabbed off the Hard Disk, or in the cases of low ram, for your computer to move stuff from the Ram to the Hard Disk and back again).

I've received a replacement MBP i7 - Apple were most helpful.

There is no sign of the issue on battery power after cloning the drive back as when I was experiencing the problem - I'll report if it crops up again. Interestingly the new one is running 3-4C cooler under load according to the internal temperature sensors.

This afternoon, I ran the full hardware test and found no problems. I reinstalled the OS from scratch, and did not use time machine. I applied all the updates, installed iLife etc and started using the browser again. I even ripped a movie in handbrake just to test it out, with no issues. After all of that, I was using the web browser and it froze again. The computer was rather cool at the time.

Earlier today, it was freezing at the login screen if I left it there for a couple minutes. In fact, it was consistently freezing every time it booted. Now, we'll have to see. I'm going to shut it down and let it sit for a while to see if it acted like it did yesterday and this morning. It's only happened to me while it was under very light load.

Either way, I'm headed to the Apple store tomorrow. Hopefully they will believe me even if I can't reproduce it for them. I probably should have just left it alone, but I figure they would make me go through a reinstall.

Many of us have been having this problem. I am actually returning my 15inch i7 4gigs ram to apple tomorrow for a replacement

they couldn't figure out what was wrong and asked if I would rather get mine repaired or get a new one. I clearly chose to get a new one.

My MBP has the Hitachi drive and it has frozen once as well.

I'm thinking this is a software or firmware issue. An update should fix this.

I'm having exact same problem. It happens almost daily. The screen freezes on me and nothing works. Only in one case when I was watching a video the screen froze but sound kept playing. I called Tech Support yesterday and they had me restart in safe mode. I haven't used it much since then but i will see if it still does it. I'm also having problem with internet connection. AirPort looks connected with full reception but internet doesn't work. have to turn off AirPort and turn back on to get it work again. It's a brand new computer and I spend over $2500 on it. It's my first Mac and it's disappointing to have those issues.

I can also confirm the same exact freeze problem with my i7, 15" MBP. If this helps, I usually run Win7 64bit, and it will freeze 2-3 times a day. Same symptom of the mouse working for another 10-15secs, then the pointer freezes. I initially blamed it on Windows, but then had the same behavior happen in OS X (I'm running bootcamp). So it seems to be hardware related.

My guess...? It's a graphics issue of some type. Both in Windows and OS X, this usually happens when a window or dialog box is maximizing. It freezes half-way, so the window is partially transparent. I can't find any updated video drivers from nVidia.

Very expensive laptop...too bad it's not usable in front of any customers at this point.

Just got back from the Apple store, and they were able to switch out my i7 15in for me, even though it was CTO. They refunded me the difference for the 7200rpm drive, and everything else was the same. I have to commend Apple on making this right. I was surprised they even had a process to switch mine out and refund me the difference. They said it was the first time they had ever done it, so I don't know if every store would do this.

A couple things to note: It hadn't frozen on me all morning, so I was wondering if I should even go down there until I could reproduce it. Luckily, it froze as soon as I took it out to show them. I told them my whole story, and they also noticed that the bottom of my case was not flush with the body, which points to build quality issues.

Another problem I noticed, it would wake up in the middle of night and just start running until opened and closed the lid (definitely not a WoL issue). That may or may not be related.

Personally, I'm glad I didn't wait for a fix. I plan on switching out the HD with a SSD in a year, so it was a compromise I could live with. YMMV...

No problems to report on this end; at least system wise. On the other hand, it seems my MBP is prone to warping possibly

My 15 inch i7 MBP only freezes when it's running on battery. I can move the cursor around but everything is unresponsive. The only way to fix it is to hold the power button down and restart. It happens randomly without any known cause and only a couple apps are running. It's really frustrating for a $2k laptop that's supposed to be mobile.

I was asked to restart with GSOD .i did and the same thing
I inserted the Applications dvd and pressed the d key .Performed the hardware test and all was ok

Removed the Motu driver by connecting gin target disk mode nut still the same GSOD
