MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

I wouldn't make this up.. Believe me, I wish it weren't true. I wouldn't have spent days troubleshooting, pleading with geniuses and trying to get someone to acknowledge that I am not abusing my $2500 computer.

Just google "nvidia solder packaging" and you will see pages of information to read. There are emails from NVidia personnel claiming the failed packaging "solder bumps & whatever sits under the GPU" was only used on laptop components, but tests were done on the compound and the high lead packaging was used on desktops too. HP, DELL , Apple and probably others were impacted since they had NVidia graphics cards installed. 8xxx & 9xxx series cards and who knows what else.

I'm not here to convince anyone, as my problem is now fixed. I'm just trying to help maybe ONE person who is desperate to get their PC running and has nowhere to go. People here need to realise that resetting PRAM and Diags are good starts, and if Applecare is available, it should be used, but the only remaining conclusion is not that the PC was mistreated and Apple scientifically engineered these machines to overcome any obstacle. They have flaws. I noticed right away with the backlight bleeding, screen darkening from heat, yellow tinting, HDD failure due to heat and now the GPU.

I just upgraded my iMac 8,1 to 6 GB RAM, that' how confident I am that mine is good for awhile, and if not, I can fix it again. My next step would be to upgrade my 1TB WD to a SSD to reduce heat even more, but those need to drop in price first.

Very well stated. I have had the same issues as everyone else on this board. A 'Gray death screen' kernel panics, never a good sign. After a couple of hours with a Sr. tech I was told my graphics card was bad. My I7 could not complete even a basic hardware test.

Not a problem... off we go to the Genius Bar.. No problem here, thirty seconds later" You have a bad HD. We are just going to replace it and you will be as good as 'new' in an hour or two. I was as good as new. Went home, backed up from time machine and the next morning, you guessed it.. Kernel Panic and the Death screen.
At this point, I called Apple and was told they were going to replace my 15" 2.66 I7, GREAT NEWS.
Just run a few more tests with a Tech and a new machine will be on it's way to you. No problem,
" You should not have problems with our products, especially after a hardware repair".

I have had problems with my I7 since the day I took it out of the box. The store said bring it back the first week for a replacement, I should have listened. I felt it was migration software conflicts and could work them out.
Apple is doing a tap dance with these laptops. I bought my kids two for the holidays.... THEY ARE GOING BACK-- Period. I'm a Mac guy since the Apple IIe when it was not cool to be an Apple consumer. I'l just wait for the next generation. I love the products and hate getting another bad one.

Sorry for the rant, just a little ******. The reason for my reply was this. There is a file in MS office
Silverlight.plu gin. If you remove it, you may have less freezes.
Best to everyone.

Didn't you sell yours?

If you are reading this thread and a replacement is offered to you, take it and move on.

There are many (too many really) real answers in this thread that probably cover most of the cases. The architecture is not inherently bad. There are some abhorrent memory chips that some of us were unlucky enough to get - there are clearly other causes mixed in 85 pages of issues. Apple replaced my machine and I have no problems. I get more done on this machine then I have on any other computer I've owned.

You are unlikely to get great treatment if you let your anger get the best of you when dealing with them. Be firm but cool headed. I was angry at the position I found myself in with my new machine but I was able to contain myself and successfully navigate the warranty hurdles to get a store exchange. Just try not to be a d i c k about it.

Otherwise magically destroy it and check with your insurance agent.

The machine I bought a month ago has been ding this since purchase. Most often it freezes on start-up and shut-down, but it also freezes at other times. Mostly when I try to use skype, but also seemingly at random with little workload. Half the time I get a black box telling me to force shutdown, usually when it freezes on shutdown, half the time I get nothing at all. I thought it was a software conflict until I found this thread. Unfortunately, I found the thread three days after the return period was over. I've been meaning to bring it in because it's happening now three times a day on average, but I'm worried they will give me a rehabbed old machine as a replacement. Any advice?

Argh, finally! I recieved my new MacBook Pro 15" (standard model, no extras or anything special added), since then my Mac has frozen five times, and it is driving me crazy. It seems there isn't any program in particular that does it, and my Mac is not under any "stress". The programs I've been using is Safari, Firefox, Adium, iTunes, Skype, The Sims 3, iChat and amazon Kindle. Not all have been used at the same time. The Mac doesn't make any weird sounds prior to the freezing. What happens is that the screen freezes, and the mouse follows and dies some second later, but if I'm listening to iTunes the music keeps coming. I have NO idea how to prevent this, or if there is something I should do. Has anyone found out how to prevent/solve this? Has Apple come out with anything? Please help!

I had similar problems (alot of patchwork screens and freezing)... After four trips to the Genius Bar, three new logic boards, one new hard drive, one new graphics card/display, the problem still persisted. I went back in again and they gave up on it, and handed me a brand new one. I'm soooo hoping that my issues with MacBooks are over. Takes the fun out of buying a new toy when it doesn't work and you spend more time without it then with it. I'll keep you posted.

(My husband and I both had/have MacBook Pro's at work - mine was a 2009 model, his is a 2010 model: neither one has ever had a single issue.)

This is a serious issue that Apple really needs to pay more attention to. I've had wonderful experiences with the local Genius Bars, but I'm talking Apple as a whole. There's no excuse for this many folks having so many issues - and nothing systematic being done about it.
