Cannot Send Mail, the server rejected one of the recipient's addresses.

Something is definitely squirrelly with the iPads smtp. My iPhone accounts imported. I can't send with my work account but Comcast works (however sending takes way too long). I deleted the account and recreated it. The iPad verifies it and yet I cannot send email. I have tried several things including port 25 and no ssl. I'm quite sure ate this point something is amiss in Mail.
Bear in mind the iPhone with the exact settings works and continues to work. The password is correct (I even tried a wrong one just to force the password error and prove it was getting past that point).
I'm wondering is ssl is broken and my provider won't accept non-SSL outgoing.
I know this is an old thread but both my spouse and I have been having the same problem recently with not being able to send email from our comcast server from our iPhones. I found this thread and thought it wouldn't hurt to try--your solution to change the port to 25 worked perfectly. Thank you! 🙂
I tried every suggestion on here, but nothing worked. Then for no logic I can understand something fixed it.
I deleted everything and switched off the iCloud mail sync. Then I added gmail first (everything worked again). Next, i turned iCloud mail sync back on. Everything works still... What the? Before, I had done what I thought was the same thing. Maybe the order of adding accounts back can matter in some instances. I don't get it but I don't care... It works now.
Of course ten minutes from now it will probably stop working just despite my victory post!
Good luck everyone! Don't give up!
On my ipad, the problem was a broken account.
My work voicemail goes through a vpn, but it synced when I syned up my mail accounts. So that broken account was trying to download mail. That account would sit long enough that it would time out other accounts trying to send mail. Once I deleted the "bad" account, everything worked as expected.
Hi guys I've got my own hosting servers and had an issue with this for ages. Only till now!
Like others have suggested: check your outgoing settings as for some reason this was not imported from the pc when doing a restore / update. Just put the same username and password in your outgoing settings by default with most mail providers you will not need to enable ssl. Once you click done the device will try and authenticate and all being well you will see loads of ticks and a swoosh if there are emails waiting to go.
Good luck :-) may the apple be with you
Slininconcoova, your suggestion has worked for me - at least it is still going after 12 hours. I didn't import any settings from a computer; I set up the iPhone 4S 'cold', turning ssl on. I have now turned it off and entered my username and password instread. Send then worked again for that account.
It is strange that this problem manifests itself without once meddling with the account settings: one day no problem, next day the 'server rejected' message. Interestingly I had no problems with my Gmail account. It appears to not being even a physical location issue (same positioon, same carrier, same network). Maybe it has something to do with he server routing(s) in the mobile network - do they change from time to time? But what do I know! Thanks!
I was having trouble sending emails from my iphone and ipad. As soon as I wasn't at home and on my "home" network and was roaming on other wifi or 3G I got error messages saying "unable to send mail, copy has been left in outbox".
I tried every reset and altered settings that was suggested to me by both Apple and my phone service provider and nothing worked. I was beginning to give up when a friend told me about Email Everywhere and I contacted them. They sorted it immediately and everything has worked perfectly ever since on both my iphone and ipad, no matter where I use them. I can happily receive AND SEND from all my accounts from anywhere.
I recommend them completely :-)

Hope this helps, Cheers Charlie
This post has been really useful and has solved my similar problem. My ipad suddenly stopped allowing me to send emails from any account, other than the ipad email address, from my home server. Having read all your advice I did the following...
In settings...Outgoing Server / SMTP / Primary Server, set username and password ( which were currently blank) turn SSI on
Now everything is working perfectly even though I have no idea what SSI is?
Hope tis helps other frustrated users! Janet
These posts have helped and I have tried to follow the steps of editing my outgoing mail server to entering my username and password however,
it all grayed out and will not let me change the settings. Any help with this would be great thank you
For some reason every now and then my email goes bonkers on my iPhone... I love my iPhone but I never had this issue with my android. But with that said my consistent issues are: all of a sudden my delete button goes away I can edit and select the emails but the delete button is gone and second my email won't send.
For me it wasn't my home wifi I turned it off and still wouldn't work so for my first problem the solution was:
Delete ALL my emails, I have three, aol(main), gmail, and yahoo. Then I HAVE TO power my phone off turn it back on and add them all back...annoying but it works. My delete function is back.
My second problem which this discussion is about:
I went to my main email under mail and settings and just changed my main smtp to my gmail one instead if aol and voila it worked. I am not a computer wizard( wish I was) so I don't know why this works but I turned off my smtp for aol and turned on the server for gmail.
Hope this helps someone!
Oh btw I have an iPhone 5 don't know if that makes a difference.
By deleting and reinstalling the email connections, you may have changed which one is the "Default" so that your device is now sending from a different email address.
Anyone else with this problem should try changing their "default" email account (from the "Mail, Contacts. Calendars" page in the Settings app.) to see if that helps.
You can also change this for a single test email by tapping on the "Cc:/Bcc: From:" line of an email then tapping "From:" and selecting another account.
I hope this helps someone.

Perfect.
That is because they use TLS type of authentication for outgoing mail
Ipads dont have an option to set TLS and it chooses ( people normally end up choosing ) SSL.
unchecking it will route it to TLS. ( Port the same, 587 or some such.)
I have tried all of the suggested fixes discussed in this forum and nothing has worked. I can receive email, but I cannot send. I have tried to change the port, and I have turned SSL on and off. I have entered and reentered my password and user ID numerous times.
I still get the error message which says "sender address....rejected by the server."
I logged onto my email server from a desktop computer and it works fine so the problem must be my iPhone 5.
I am ready to throw my phone through a wall....please help!
All of a sudden I am also having this problem, too. It began shortly before I upgraded to IOS 7.0.4, so I cannot put the blame there. Interestingly it only happens with my SMTP addresses. As all the rest of you, I can receive ok but unable to send. However, when I use gmail, sending & receiving works just fine. ????
SAME HERE ARRRRRRRRHHHH!!!!!
Could recieve fine but cound not send. Tried eveything then found this and it WORKED!!!!
