No - this required the iBooks app. The iBooks app is for the iPad and the same will be available for the iPhone when firmware update 4.0 for the iPhone is released this summer.

An app written for OS X on a Mac can't be installed and used on the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, and an app written for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad can't be installed and used on a Mac.

what is wrong with adobe digital editions? you can read all your epub books on that.

You certainly cannot read any epub book you buy from the iBookstore which has DRM (that means almost any book you pay for) with Adobe Digital Editions. There is no way at all to read such books on a Mac or PC. Have you not understood that is the whole point of this thread?

You can browse and download books in the iTunes Store under Books. Using the iBooks in iCloud beta, they can be sent to your iOS devices. But, as far as I know, there is no way to read them.

"Requirements: Books can only be viewed using iBooks an an iPad, iPhone (3G or later), or iPod touch (2nd generation or later). Samples can only be sent to iBooks on your devices running iOS 4.3.3 or later that have Automatic Downloads enabled."

Your library is a great resource for free ebooks and audiobooks using Adobe Digital Edition to download. Only problem is that not a lot of these books that can be used on Macs. Apple will soon come too realize that this is what customers want and that we don't necessarily want 4 devices to get what we need from technology. They should really expand the ibook to the mac pro's - they're missing out on an up and coming hot market. If all else fails - print will never die.

This is certainly sad. Apple should try to negotiate with publishers a better DRM agreement so Ibooks can be used on MACs or use a DRM that can be unlocked with ADE or similar for use on ereaders or Macs. I am really disappointed that I now have to strain my eyes to read on my IPOD what I had hoped to at least read on my Mac Pro. Won't be buying books from ITunes store anymore.

Apple simply doesn't have the know how to make iBooks compatible on their computers. It's just that simple. I assume they would like to sell more books, I assume they care what their customers are asking for, making those assumptions one can only assume that they don't offer it because they simply do not know how to do it accross platforms. Otherwise, we'd have to assume that Apple doesn't care what customers want and we couldn't ever think that could we? No be quiet and go buy an iPad for $600, you didn't need that money anyway.

Surely Apple knows that every other ebook reader is making a version available for computers.

Either they don't plan to go any further with iBooks or they're insane.

And judging by the stock prices today, I don't think that insanity is their problem!

Maybe this is just one too many avenues to pursue, and they're letting it go?

Dunno. What do you think?
