No - this required the iBooks app. The iBooks app is for the iPad and the same will be available for the iPhone when firmware update 4.0 for the iPhone is released this summer.

An app written for OS X on a Mac can't be installed and used on the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, and an app written for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad can't be installed and used on a Mac.

I believe you are absolutely correct MTG68 Apple doesn't have the know how or just don't give a hoot!!! Things are going too well for them otherwise to bother focusing on this issue. Sincerely too bad and if they are monitoring this site then if all the negative feedback still doesn't bring a response we can rest assured we are correct. IBooks is a lost cause because it isn't a lost leader that's for sure!

It's been interesting to see the number of people that are equally frustrated. I provided feedback to Apple as well, and included a link to this thread. It's probably naive to think they don't know how to make iBooks viewable on idevices. It's got to be some kind of conscious decision! Why can you use music movies and tv shows on all devices, but not books?

Hi All.

I recently purchased a ebook on my ipad and wanted to read it on my macbook. So i did a search (probably the same kind of search you all did) and found this thread. I'll admit, i only gave a look thru the first 2 pages of responses so i'm not exactly sure if we're all suffering from the same problem--but here is my situation and what i came up with. Perhaps this will help a few of us:

I wanted to be able to read the book i purchased from ibooks on my computer(s) at home/ work. I have a macpro at home and a macbook i bring to work. Both are authorized computers according to Itunes.

so what I did was log into itunes and clicked on the itunes store. On the right column, there is a list of option links (Power Search, Browse, Account, etc...). And somewhere there was an option titled "Purchased (NEW)."

I clicked that. It brought me to a section that had all my purchases thru the itunes store in the 4 major categories of Music TV shows Apps and Books. I clicked on the books section, located the book i wanted to read and i downloaded it (clicked the lil cloud icon with an arrow on it) onto my macbook pro. Once you download that book, it will appear in your itunes under the appropriate category (since it was an ebook i downloaded, it was in the BOOKS section of my library.). If you click on the BOOKS section and highlight the book you want to read, you can right click and "Reveal in Finder." That shows you where itunes saves the ebooks it syncs (and it is seemingly using the path of: Music -> Itune-> Itunes Music -> Books -> "authors name" -> "Book title."). So this processed helped me find where the ebooks are stored after you sync them (or after you redownload them). But how can i view it?

The ebooks are in an epub file format and you can use Adoble digital editions software to read that format.

I'll admit their interface isn't as visually appealing when compared to reading on the ipad--but i haven't experienced any problems viewing that ebook yet.

Hope this helps somewhat!

The essential point of this thread is that you cannot read a book you purchase from Apple's iBookstore which has DRM (essentially all of them except maybe O'Reilly and Take Control) on your Macbook, not with Adobe Digital Editions, nor with any other program.

Just found out tonight that Apple doesn't let you read your own iBooks on your own Macbook. They are really, really far behind on this. Thank goodness I only bought a short story for a couple of bucks before finding this out.

Kindle seems like a much better way to go. Audible has great audio books, and I also download some of those from free sites.

Will add my feedback, not hoping for much.
