Belkin Network USB Hub (F5L009) - problem solved!

This problem relates to the fact that once again Belkin haven't bothered to update the installation software for their great USB Hub...not happy! Ironically this is the same problem Belkin had with this device when it came out back in 2007, with earlier versions of Mac OSX V (10.5); it's a simple fix and yet they have basically stumbled again for Snow Leopard!

PROBLEM: Belkin Network USB Hub F5L009 gives an error message "SXUPTP driver has not been installed" when you instal the software if you have Snow Leopard.

SOLUTION:
1. Download "SX Virtual link for Mac" V3.3.0 (Date 11/13/2009) from http://www.silexamerica.com/support/software/svl.html
2. You will have downloaded a zip file called "sx-virtual link_mac330.zip"; unzipping this will give you a folder named "s-42a330".
3. Within that folder, navigate to SXVirtualLink>contained_packages>Driver>10.6 (the 10.6 refers to Snow Leopard OS); inside there is a file called "Silex_kext" dated 5/11/2009
4. Drag this file into the installation folder Utility>Connect>contained_packages; it will ask if you want to replace the older version of this file that exists there. Click "yes".

Now you can go through the normal installation process using the modified package, as per the manual, and hey presto, everything works magically!!

[If for some reason you don't have the installation disk to start with, or have a problem sticking it on your desktop, it is available at http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/...20hub/r_id/166 as F5L009 Driver - Mac (version 1.5.0, OS compatibility : Mac OS 10.5; note there is no 10.6 compatible version - and THAT is the core of the problem with the installation disk in the first place).

QUESTION: I know nothing about what the **** I am doing, and yet managed to figure this out from Googling and reading - why can't the brains at Belkin have done the same - it is a trivial exercise for them to have made a version 1.6.0 compatible with Snow Leopard. I am seriously unimpressed!

SOLUTION TO CONSTANT DISCONNECT (Running Snow Leopard 10.6, Belkin USB Network Hub, and external WD hard drive)

After trying everything from disabling the DHCP on the usb server (notorious Belkin of course), updating firmware, etc. this is strange solution that I found.

-- Run both the native Belkin Control Center application and the SX Virtual Link at the same -- my external storage stays connect as long as I want and my drive mounts instantly. (Simple solution)

Problem 1 - Running Only Belkin Control Center

Connection is constant, but the drive fails to mount randomly. I could only get the drive to mount maybe 1 out of every 5 times I tried no matter if I formatted it MS-DOS FAT or Mac - Extended Journalized

Problem 2 - Running only SX Virtual Link

Drive consistently mounts but connection disconnects every 90 seconds.

This problem of using an external hard drive that consistently mounts to my Mac has plagued me for the last 4 days. I didn't see any other solution on here or Google-able. I hope this helps someone else out there.

After much searching and frustration I found this information at Silex ...

At this point they admit no solution to the problem but they are working on solving it ..

More than Belkin can offer!

I kept the link in my bookmarks so i could return there every week to see if there has been any change ...

Can only suggest you do the same ...

Same here. It works now, luckily!

I have Belkin Home Base (not a usb hub) but installing the Silex software made the Belkin software to start working! I can now print with my HP printer, and use my WD external hard drive wirelessly.

I wish Belkin would keep supporting their products and would update their drivers though.

Latest email received from Silex:

Dear X,

On June 2nd (2016), we shared that Apple has started working with us to help resolve the incompatibility between our USB over IP products and the MAC OS X 10.11 (El Capitan). The next step is that Silex Technology will be sending two engineers to participate in Apple Engineering Workshop during the first week of August at Apple Headquarters in Cupertino, California.

User uploaded file

The new software interface introduced in El Capitan became incompatible with our USB over IP technology which makes USB devices available over IP technology on Apple computers. The following Silex products are impacted:

  • Silex Virtual Link SDK (SVL)
  • USB Virtual Link SDK (UVL)
  • SX 3000GB – USB Device server
  • SX DS 3000WN – USB Device server
  • DS 510 – USB device server
  • SX DS 4000U2 – USB Device server

We will keep you updated to our progress but are optimistic that we will be sharing good news in August. We sincerely apologize to all of you for experiencing the inconvenience during this time.

Sincerely,

Babar Hashim
Silex Technology America, Inc.

I am waiting now for this progress update, it's already past the 'good news in August' deadline. The email was sent July 20th 2016.

I know that I am a bit late to reply on this, but maybe it helps some people out here.

I had been successfully using a Silex Device Server to run my USB Printer over the network for quite some time. With the introduction of El Capitan Silex Virtual Link would not work anymore. The Silex website still does not provide a solution to this, but if you contact Silex' product support and ask for a solution, they will send you the link to a download site where you can obtain SX Virtual link which is supposed to work in El Capitan, and which definitely works under macOS Sierra (where I installed it). The softwarecomes with a kext for the SXUPTP which also needs to be installed. Presently, these are fully working beta versions, but Silex have said they plan to roll out the software by the end of 2016, beginning 2017.
