Yeah, my dictionary scroll bars are missing. Resizing the window doesnt help, arrow keys/mouse wheel wont work. Ive logged out on safari, Ive removed that file from the cache, and it is STILL not working.
I mean like I tried logging out of my wikipedia account on safari, and then returning to the dictionary to check on the scrollbars (which still arent there). I read that that was a solution.
So yes, I am talking about the dictionary.app in /Applications, where the scrollbars are missing.
No no, there is a problem with apple's dictionary app. There are no scrollbars when I select wikipedia. If you google "apple dictionary scrollbars", you can see how many other people are having this problem.
OK. So the Safari and wiki account were red herrings. In Apple's Dictionary, you're correct, the scrollbars don't work with any Wikipedia entry. I have no idea how to solve it, since that's something I rarely use. All I can suggest is that if you want to report this issue to Apple's engineering, send a bug report via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, join the
Mac Developer Program—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to
Apple BugReporter and file your bug report. The nice thing with this procedure is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.
Chiming in to say "me too" with the Dictionary scrollbars. Unfortunately as a writer it's something I use regularly and the missing scrollbar is driving me nuts.
1. From your browser, go to Wikipedia's main page and log in. Use the "remember me" feature. (Register if needed)
2. In the upper right corner, click on "New Features."
3. Under "Take Me Back" section found in the lower middle of the next page, click the "click here" indicating you would like to turn off the new features.
4. Fill out their little survey asking why you want to turn them off and update.
That's it. The next time you access dictionary.app, the scroll bars will be working under the Wikipedia section.
The scrollbars on my copy of the app have disappeared as well. I just checked another Mac running Leopard (10.5) and the scrollbars aren't there either.
I must be doing something wrong. I've gone through these steps both in Firefox and in Safari, and I still don't have scrollbars in Dictionary's Wikipedia. In step 4, you say to "update" — that's the only part I couldn't see a button or other option to do. Is that where I've gone wrong?
Sorry... I just said "update" because I didn't remember the exact verbiage.
The button actually says "Turn new features off" and is located at the bottom of the survey. If you are still having problems, purging your browsers caches and cookies might help. Of course, I am just guessing but it's a logical guess worth a shot!
This is just a work-around until Apple fixes dictionary.app to be compatible with the Wiki update. There are still some minor rendering problems.
Baltwo makes an excellent recommendation for those so inclined. Apple feedback is important. I have read posts on other forums saying something to the effect that Apple is aware of the problem but there are no pending solutions coming now or in the future. I'm not sure exactly what they mean by that. They wouldn't elaborate claiming NDA restrictions.
