Hey folks,
My 13" MBP was having the same issues others are reporting: random freeze w/ various colors on both displays. A motherboard replacement did not do the trick, so I recently had the system RAM replaced. I've now had my MBP attached to my 23" Samsung external display for 5 days without any issues *crosses fingers*. The memory replacement seems our best bet so far.
I have not run the EFI firmware update yet (
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1331). I'm skeptical of the efficacy of this fix, as the description of the issues the new firmware is supposed to address doesn't seem to jive with our main problem.
"The update resolves an issue where an attached external display may occasionally incorrectly show a purple coloration" Hah. A bit of an understatement there, Apple.
But if the firmware works for you, then great. I would just be wary about considering the issue fixed after only a few days. Previously, my machine could go as many as 7-10 days w/o issue, only to freeze 3 times in one day.
My advice: take a picture of it when it locks or bring it into the store while it is locked up (careful, it gets hot) and kindly request new RAM. You may even get it back the same day.
