MBP13‘3 and External Monitor Problem (screen goes pink/ laptop hangs)

I just got my MacBook Pro 13'3 2.4 GHz, 4gb, deliveried today, I brought a MiniDisplay to VGA adaptor along with it.

When I connect the external Display to VGA adaptor, first of all, both monitors are fine, after few mintues( maybe display go to sleep mode), laptops hangs both screen go to pink/purple color. Keyboard and Mouse not responding anymore, have to shutdown the laptop by holding down the power button.

Does any one have this problem, is this a Hardware flaw or OS?

thanks

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3), MacBook Pro 13'3 2.4 GHz, 4gb

@yogipatel,
It could also be that you are experiencing other problems with the same symptoms. Check whether you have errors in the Console Log shortly before the problem occurs. In my experience, the problem we're discussing here left no traces in the Console Log. I once found an entry from Safari just before both screens went mono-color and the computer became unresponsive. That was about a week after the RAM had been exchanged by Apple. After that, it ran for more than a week until I installed OS X 10.6.5 and, a bit later, the firmware update. Still no problems.

Hello everyone,
I have been having the same issue for a long time now and I had hoped that with the combined updates of the os and the efi, this issue would have been resolved but it is not the case.
I have two external monitors both samsung and it crashes on both (on a 1080p res) with a HDMI mini display port with a 13" mid 2010 MBP.
I think I have to go to an Apple Store as the issue is more and more redundant unless anyone has a suggestion?
Does the resetting of the PRAM work?

Thanks

In my experience, not in the slightest. It's been recommended a lot in this thread, but no one has ever commented that it improved their situation.

As a general update, I am experiencing this problem a lot less since the EFI update (most in bootcamp but also some in OSX). Many days I will go without a crash... to the point where I am now surprised when it does occur, but I can confidently say this problem is still not fixed. It will crash at some point when connected to an external monitor.

As most of you I had the same problem, thanks to this thread it gave me a some hints on what to try and solve the problem. I will keep it short

Reset PRAM, SMC - Didn't work
EFI Update - Didn't work
Replace RAM(Had a real debate with Genius at Bar to get this done) - Didn't work
Send over mail to Apple - Logic board replaced - Solved the problem
It's been 2 days now and no hangs so far.

I am pretty impressed with the way repair is handled by Apple. I got my Laptop back in 36 hours from the time I dropped the package at Fedex.

Also I felt like Apple is aware it is hardware issue and only replacing Logic board resolves the issue for sure, In my case from the time they received my Mac to repair completed and return shipment pending it was only 2/3 hours, which makes me think that they know exactly what to do to fix the problem.

I am not sure why at Genius Bar they were reluctant to do this. I was told at Genius Bar that they couldn't replicate it for 24 hours, we only assure compatibility with Apple display, blah....

Again thanks to this thread and all your suggestions

just got a software update notification which sounds like it addresses our issue (13 inchers). i have not installed this or tested it out, has anyone else seen this or tried this yet?

"About MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.0

This update is recommended for MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) models. The update resolves an issue where an attached external display may occasionally incorrectly show a purple coloration."

I had the same issue. Connect miniDisplayPort to external monitor and 1 minute to 1 hour later both screens would go blank and the laptop would be locked up. Cap locks key no longer works. Unplugging the miniDisplayPort does work. Have to lean on the power button for several seconds to force reboot.

Here's what I tried with the help of apple support:
1. Failure occurs with Gigaware and Apple VGA converters.
2. Seems to happen faster with overhead projector vs. second desktop monitor
3. Seemed to start happening in only the last month or two. Have had laptop working with monitors/projectors for almost a year.
4. Ran all of the disk utilities.. verify&repair and verify&repair privileges
5. Reset the PRAM
6. Reset the SM? which reset the logic board

None of these things made a difference.

7. Backed up my OSX version from 10.6.6 to 10.6.3. I have now been running for over a week with no issues. This appears to have solved this issue.

There must be a bug that was introduced in 10.6.6 that affects external monitors. Backing up to 10.6.3 is OK as a temporary workaround, however this has other issues.

Hey Apple Engineers,

Please get to the bottom of this so that we can update to 10.6.7 without any issues! THANKS!!
