Hi,
here's the DVDs work fine, but he laser for CDs, work for some CDs and not for others. Doesn't seems to me like a hardware problem. All my others cheap DVD-CD reader, writer work fine for many year. I wonder why pay for quality and having this kind of problem.
I'll try with an USB or firewire DVD-CD drive. I also have spots in the screen after one year of use, but it's an other discussion.
I'll think twice when comes the time to replace my mbp.

Hello everyone - I have a MacBook Pro also and periodically I'll go to play a cd and it will do the same as all of your units are doing: attempt to read the disc 3 times and without 'recognizing' it spit it back out. Meanwhile, DVDs play fine. The solution is actually pretty simple and has worked for me 100% of the time my laptop stops reading CDs: buy a can of compressed air (one with the straw), instert the straw about half an inch into the drive and and blow air into the slot moving from left to right and back again for a total of about 10-15 seconds.
I can almost guarantee this will solve your problem. Make sure it's a newer can of air - you'll need the full strength to thoroughly clean off the diry laser or whatever other components in there are dirty.
I have no idea if Apple would 'sign off' on such a fix but it's certainly more convenient, much faster and less expensive than having them dismantle the unit at a Genuis Bar... and it works. If it doesn't work the first time, blow more air into the slot. Eventually you'll clear the dust from the laser. I've done this 4x (each time promted by the drive not reading an insterted cd) since the Fall of 2010 and my Mac has continued to funtion fine so at least in my case blowing compressed air into the dvd drive hasn't damanged the unit at all.
Good luck.
I have a few CDs that my drive will read, the others it will not. One situation is most unusual. I have a 2 CD set of Schubert Piano Trios, where the drive will read the first CD, but will not read the second CD. It seems that if iTunes eventually recognizes a CD, including getting the track names, then that CD will always work. There are other CDs, not many though, that the drive will recognize. Since I have now found a pattern, this implies to me that it is a software problem, not a hardware problem. I have tried blasting the drive with compressed air several times to no avail. I am going to try reinstalling the OS. I am curious if people who have upgraded to Lion have the same problem.

Hello. It's now 2014 and I am having the same problem. My Macbook Pro (mid 2010) version will read DVDs and not brand new music CDs. I don't think that it is a hardware issue because I get the same message when I attach a portable DVD reader/writer.
Has anyone been able to solve this issue more recently. Thanks.
I'm experiencing this issue as well, and want to know if Apple responds (or has responded) with a definitive fix.
