Just upgraded my 3GS to an IPhone 4. After reading this and other posts on how to make the TomTom car kit work, I stuck a small piece of velcro the bottom of the TomTom holder(both sides together and left the paper on the side of the velcro touching the IPhone), so that when the phone is installed it will push the button all the way in and activate the TomTom device correctly.

Worked perfectly. It fits perfectly, it charges, it has voice thorough the bluttoorh, it uses the GPS and tracks a lot faster than my 3GS phone. The lastest update to the TomTom software is even better than before.

Very nice..!! Thanks for the tips, and even though I have a GPS in my vehicle, it is getting a little older and my TomTom works nicely...

I like TomTom, at the end they put together a nice GPS app for the IPhone, and unkowningly, have something that works nicely for the next generation of the IPhone...

I have now had two different iPhone 4's and two different TomTom Car Kits with the iPhone 4 adapter and I can report that this is not a proper solution - it just does not work reliably.

It is definitely the Car Kit at fault as I have tried my two iPhone 4's and also my partners. The first Car Kit that I returned would not power the iPhone 4 even with the supplied bumper fitted. The second Car Kit would power the iPhone 4 OK but when you use the free Car Kit app, you can see that it does not think that the iPhone is docked and is hence not using the Car Kit's GPS device.

I have had no satisfaction from TomTom yet so I would not recommend this unit as suitable for iPhone 4 phones.

Can anyone confirm which case (if any) works with he TomTom kit. I have a Sonix Snap case. Without the case (and with the mod that has been confirmed), phone fits/works fine. With the case, no dice. Not enough clearance in the TomTom cradle. Through my research, it appears that the "original" version of the Sonix Snap case had a complete cut-out on top that provided clearance for the TomTom kit (the current design has cutom cut-outs around the power/audio). Is there a case that out there that will work. Don't want to have to remove the case every time I'm in the car.

Edit - all of the above is referring to iPhone 4.

Sorry to read your troubles.

It all works perfectly and reliably for me.

I am still using a diy solution though as no matter how many time I request that official adapter from tomtom nothing happens. I've been filling in that request form every once in a while since the adapter was available. But I get nothing. Ho hum. My "bit of rubber on the rocker" does the job perfectly anyway.

I can score the [iFrogz luxe lean case|http://ifrogz.com/product/IP4GLL] a 9.0, the phone goes into the car kit without needing to be released from the case. But, it doesn't charge, still needs the pad behind it.
Close but no cigar.

I use Zagg's Invisible Shield for these reasons:
iPhone fits all types of docks and mounts (including Tomtom's)
Retains the good looks of the phone
phone is more grippy - less likely to slip out of your hand.
prevents scratches - no more feelings of horror when you realise you've been carrying the phone along side your keys.

It wont save your phone from impact damage but then you'd have to have a significantly bulky case to prevent that anyway.

regardless of what zagg says I find the Invisible shield does not last for ever. So far, I get about a year's use before I have to buy another shield and re-apply, which is good enough for me. Application of shield does require care, to get it on correctly and not mess up.

I have fotter the addaptor to the tomtom car kit and it does not work at all, no charging, no cocking, no gps, no bluetooth. However my mates phone does all of these. I have uninstalled the car app and tomtom satnav app still no joy then i reset my phone, (What a pain in the **)and still nothing. No joy from tomtom. I think it must be my new phone, because it works with my mates!!
Any ideas?

I've also FINALLY received my adaptor after a long wait, only to find that it does not work at all! I've docked and re-docked and not even a glimmer of life at any point.
I've had to take one of the THREE layers of velcro strip I was using up until now, and stick it to the front of the adapter. Now it all seems to work great, a solid connection (Before with the 3 layers of velcro I had to "half-dock" it, not quite under the rolling top lip. If I pushed it all the way in it lost connection)

So, yeah, TomTom twitter says nobody else has complained and from their personal experience it works fine?! How can mine and yours be different, what gives?
At least it's...sort of improved... down to one bit of velcro haha...

This sounds really familiar and I wish I'd seen this thread before returning my car kit and also posting elsewhere:

"I bought a kit recently and found that it worked fine but only intermittently. Often it would not dock or connect immediately to Bluetooth. I've downloaded the Car Kit app, and this confirmed that the docking wasn't happening all the time (maybe 20% of the time) and that there was also no GPS fix. I also kept getting warnings that the device was not optimised. When it worked it was brilliant, but as I thought there was a problem, I returned it and got another one from another store.

The replacement one was a disater ... would not charge, would not pair in Bluetooth, would not amplify sound, would not dock or get a GPS fix ... in other words it did not work at all. The only sound I could get out of it was a beep when I held the reset button down. I reset my phone and tried using an in car charger I have - no problem - and pairing with another BT device - again, no problem. Returned to store for full refund.

I should add that I used the iPhone 4 adapter in both cases and even tried it without, but to no avail. My iPhone appears to work perfectly and there are no issues with other docking devices. Has anyone any ideas? Am I doing something wrong? Have I been unlucky in getting 2 faulty kits, or could there be something wrong with my phone???

Any / all ideas welcome, as I would like to get another kit, but only if there's a chance it will work. I use the TomTom app a lot, so like the amplified sound and quality feel of the TomTom kit. Otherwise, I see myself going back to a £10 cradle that is good, but does not have the functionality."

Should I try another cradle? It seems a bit poor to pay £80 (for a kit that says it's compatible for the iPhone 4) and then have to cobble together a fix ...

When I first receive the tom-tom dock my iPhone wouldn’t connect charge nothing

In the kit it came with the little rubber adapter which I had installed

Lucky enough I had another iPhone 4 to test out the car kit, and to my surprise it works on my wife’s iPhone 4 but mine nothing.

Same phones bought at the same time same os !

What with that I thought.

Me being a tradie and having my phone in my pocket most of time.

My wife keeping hers in her bag

I can say that my iPhone connector compared to hers were a little bit dirtier

Having one velcro strip over the adapter has fixed my problem with my Iphone.

Looks like the trouble seems to be the docking of the car kit and the IPhone, some IPhones are less or more sensitive.

My advice is to play around with how many velco strips to add on your adapter

Thanks Tranquillian your post was most insightful
