BPEACOCK, I think your logic might be a little off.
iPhone 3GS is still available, so the TomTom car kit will not be obsolete. Because you upgrade to a newer phone and equipment you purchased to work with older technology doesn't have full compatibility doesn't entitle you to future upgrade discounts. An example is I purchased a MacBook Pro 4 years ago with a snazzy Speck snap on cover, and then recently upgrade my MacBook Pro to the latest and greatest, Speck owes me for the difference in product design because I cant use the old cover on the new laptop?
Staying on the bleeding edge comes at a price. Embrace it, or stick with what you have.
From what I see, the car kit should connect up without difficulty, but the software TomTom has out now may need an update. Only time will tell, and patience will be required, especially with TomTom. A difference of .3mm should not keep the kit from accepting the iPhone4 in its mount.
I considered their app many times, but decided against it based on how fast they were performing with this app. Initial release was very slow, and not rock solid with all the time they took. Updates have not been great for their product as well.
Today I called them to see a status on compatibility, as I do not want to purchase the software not knowing it will be 100% with iOS4. There is no reason they shouldn't be up to speed as an iPhone developer, but thats TomTom for you. iOS4 will be released in 9 days, and they don't have an answer to if things work. I can understand them not knowing how it will work with an iPhone4, but they have no excuses with the OS.
I will be purchasing the iPhone4, but have my reservations with TT, so again I will wait and see.
Considering that 1) almost no one had a pre-release iPhone 4, 2) it appears that TomTom doesn't know and 3) the phones are different design wise, you should wait until the iPhone 4 is released and tested with the TT car kit before purchasing to make sure.
Fair point, I always believed the amplifier sat against the phone to enhance the phone ariels ability to receive, why is it soft and compressed when the phone sits in there? (on its own the phone GPS chip isn't feeding through the port?)
Based on the dimensions, seems like with appropriate padding the slimmer iPhone 4 should fit the holder. Some new iPhone sleeve will hopefully provide such fit.
That's the third different reply posted here. So I think the moral of the story is: we don't know yet. I'm taking a chance...just preordered my iphone 4.
when it is the 3gs or older one the rubber bar of the car kit rolls on the curved surface and iphone will slip into the grip of the car kit, but the iphone 4g will not as it is more boxy....
but by using your both hand you can fit it in without hurting any of them i think. you have to use both hand now......
