You realise this has nothing to do with how the email and attchments are sent, only how they display on your machine, right?
I have used this work around for the problem: put the photo/photos in a folder, and then attach the folder to the email. The program does not find the photos to be embedded and it arrives as a folder with photos dot jpeg.
Thanks to this forum, I was finally able to send the photos as attachments (rather than imbedded)--- but no matter what I do, the photos are compressed /low res.
Please, help! Is there a way to send the photos as an attachment in their original format?
(I switched to the Imac several days ago after years as a PC user)
exactly how are you attaching them? Have you looked in the lower right hand corner of the composed e-mail messsage to see what "size" you are making the image - I'm guessing that is set to small

Thank you, LarryHN! Such a simple, easy solution-- -- and yet it had me flummoxed for hours. I greatly appreciate your help.

Re Rich & Plain text
this is an old trap...you are correct...why plain I have no idea but you would think Apple would have fixed this issue by now...considering 'PC's still rule the market (not for long I hope)
Robbi 😁
Apple can't fix a couple of things:
1. Old windows apps that don;t support Rich Text properly
2. Modern Windows apps that do, but who's users don't know how to work them.

Thanx so much to Bush-Man and the other other fellow at the link. Ditto Biz870!!
Thanks Bush-Man, your solution worked great. Tested it to my PC as well. So glad I found your post!
Well... it seems this command solve one problem but it doesn't solve the other. I used this terminal command and the attachments were shown as icons indeed but when I used my signature (it's a giff or PNG image) it went as attachment also. :-(
Meanwhile, I found a plugin for Apple Mail that might solve this problem but it's not free and I didn't try it:

I think Apple should fix this annoying bug and make a Mail app that works like Entourage/Outlook Mac...
I don't understand why there are so many plugins while Mail app still almost the same as the first version issued.
Thanks so much. It worked!
Fred putting the file in a folder and then attaching it is the Only solution that has worked for me. Thank You!
It's now Feb 2013 and with my new imac I'm having this same problem. Trying to send out an email as an attchment and being received as an attachment. 'Bush man' said it right. Whilst, double clicking beside the photo one can change it to an icon, it still displays itself as a photo on the recepients pc. Is there any advantage in sending it as an icon, apart from the privacy aspect it may or may not benefit the sender?
And is there is clear cut solution now to deal with this or are we still scratching our heads. If there is a definitive solution, I would be so grateful to receive it.
The clarity of your answer is 100%. I have tried this too, but found that the recipient is still receiving photos embedded in the mail and NOT as an attatchment.
