SD card reader not working on iMac

The SD card reader slot on my iMac has stopped picking up cards. When I insert a card, it fails to mount.
This used to work fine, and still does if a card is inserted while booting up. But after it has been ejected, it will fail to mount again.

I've seen suggestions that this is a hardware issue.
As this sounds very unlikely - can anyone confirm?
Are other experience this?
Is there a bug fix due?

thanks

Having looked in the slot on my 2011 Macbook Pro with a torch, I noticed quite a lot of dust in there. Used an aerosol air duster, inserted a card and it works perfectly!

I think a lot of you might find the same. The slot is going to pick up dust and debris and it's causing a bad contact with the SD card.

If you've cleaned the dust away and it still doesn't work, try gently wiggling it around too.

Well, I said apparently, is a hardware technicality, not a problem. In reality I could not assert one thing or the other, since I'm not a technician myself. It bypasses the switch (if it is really a switch) on reboot? Could it be a software issue? I don't know for sure. Deal is, after having this problem, it worked pretty good for me doing what I read at the link I posted. Not a problem since.

I've been having this same issue and I'm 100% sure my problem isn't hardware related. After reading through these posts I realized that my sd card slot stopped working right around the time i installed gopro's cineform studio. I'm almost 100% sure thats the issue that caused my slot to stop working. The only fix I have for it now is to put the sd card in the slot and then close the lid to the mac so it sleeps and then open it again. Once I do that the sd card mounts. Has anyone else found another way around it or would deleteing cineform studio fix it?

I have tired to clear out the slot with a toothpick and blown air into it. I'm only saying for me I'm 100% sure my issue is software related. I can insert and take out the sd card 50 times and it'll never mount, however if i jsut leave it in and close the lid of my macbook and then open it, it will mount right away. Once it does mount I can eject it and re-mount it as many times as I want as long as it doesnt go to sleep again.
