SD card reader not working on iMac

The SD card reader slot on my iMac has stopped picking up cards. When I insert a card, it fails to mount.
This used to work fine, and still does if a card is inserted while booting up. But after it has been ejected, it will fail to mount again.

I've seen suggestions that this is a hardware issue.
As this sounds very unlikely - can anyone confirm?
Are other experience this?
Is there a bug fix due?

thanks

Guys!

I've open the SD Reader and found that problem in micro contact group> NO CONTACT.

This device VERY DIFFCULT to repair. Better to buy new one.

After more than 2 years, suddenly my build in SD card reader didn't work. Poking with a (soft) toothpick (see also picture in the article) worked inmediatly for me. Did the trick without switching off, or reboot.

I had the same problem with my 21" iMac...SD card was only recognized after reboot or wake from sleep. I tried the toothpick trick I found in this thread and it seems to have fixed the problem, at least for now. I've been swapping cards in and out and they are recognized each time.

Here's another description of the problem and solution I found:

My 2yro MBP's SD card reader stopped working on holiday 3 weeks ago. Tried everything, then, as a last resort blasted with a jet of air and since it works! Dust - the downfall of Apple products.

My iphone 4s had no sound for weeks and was about to chuck it away when I was told that dust in the charger port made the iphone believe it was being 'docked' to speakers and would mute itself. Cleaned out the port and surprise - the sound started working again! Apple really should design these things to have dust covers like other brands do...

Hi - had a problem with my SD card - was working fine and I was using Iphoto tried to import the photo's from the card and all of a sudden they where gone. After that I couldn't get the Imac to recognise any SD cards. Suspected a problem with Iphoto, reset SMC and pram no better. Installed latest version of Iphoto - bingo it worked for about 1 minute. Then nothing. I had been clearing a prompt form dropbox asking if I want to import photo's into that - closed dropbox and bingo again - has worked ever since - for some reason dropbox gets hold of the card first??? Anyway ok now - hope this helps someone.
