iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

I visited the Genius Bar with my new iPad air regarding the Safari crash problem. The genius employee showed me that I had several applications running in the background. It seems that when you leave an application it continues running in the background.

The forefinger gesture will disclose what is running. I thought that that would solve my problem and said thank you and departed. That did not solve the problem has I have cleared the back ground programs several times and still have the crash problem.

I don't recall having this problem with my iPad 3. Both iPads are 32 GB Wi-Fi only. Most if not all of my crashes occur when I hit a link to a new page.

Very frustrating and if this isn't fixed very soon I will be leaving the iPad world behind... Kindle Fire HDX 8.9"is looking like an attractive alternative

So you've had an iPad 3, but didn't know how to check and dismiss the background apps? I figure that was routine procedure, just keep it clean for general purposes and speed. It's also a good practice to reboot with a simple 'turn it off and back on again' every week or so, that kept me running error free for years when an app would act buggy with updates, it worked fine with all my iPads over the years.

But as we've now found out, the iPad Air is not behaving the same, and there's nothing 'we' can do to make it run better. The Genius' will tell you anything to get you out of 'their' face, and hope you get another Genius when you come back so they can act just as surprised as the first guy, they know there's a problem but they're not admitting it for some reason.

That's why I had suspected it may have something to do with their iAds or the revenue earning side that was hogging memory or conflicting with iframes and they couldn't resolve it without it costing them and their clients revenue.

Everything revolves around money, not addressing the issue will certainly cost them money so they must have more to lose in attempting to patch the problem right now, they must be looking for a seamless fix.

Anyway, I returned my iPad Air months ago, after the continuous crashing and being unreliable while doing online purchasing, it created a problem so I just gave up. Switched to a Galaxy 10.1 and I haven't had 'any' issues and it's never crashed on me. I like how the iPad works with my other Apple stuff, but I did get a new Samsung TV and they work together well, and now I'm checking out their phones as well.

I still like to check-in here to see if there's been any progress over the past few months, and it doesn't look like Apple has even admit there's a problem yet, so I don't expect they're even close to a solution.

I was telling friends, there was a time people didn't mind paying a little more for a quality product, that's what made Apple great, they made high quality, reliable products, not cheap stuff.

But times are different now and money isn't as easy to waste, now you have to consider if paying over $500 for an iPad Air that's unreliable and crashes unexpectedly is wise, or buying a $200 Android based tablet that's lower quality but much more reliable.

For me, No more early-adopting and high expectations from Apple, I'd rather save my money and not be out so much when things don't work as they should. I switched to a factory refurb Galaxy 10.1 for about half the price of the iPad Air, and I'm very happy with it. There's no better time to check out other options, you already know what you can expect from the iPad Air, and it's not all good.

Thanks for the tips Mr. Eee I will maintain my iPad more carefully from now on.. I don't recall ever clearing my iPad 3 but maybe I did.

Samsung may be a viable alternative but I think I'll hang with Apple for awhile yet. I don't believe they can ignore this situation very much longer. They definitely have a problem it effects most of us daily.

Cheers

And how old is this thread ????

I tired of my older iPad crashing so often.... made worse by each successive OS update. I could not ROLLBACK my OS version and I couldn't run any newer apps without updating... thank to the stranglehold between OS and apps... so... I stuck with my iPad too... until I didn't.

I bought a new Asus Transformer T100 for Christmas. It runs Win 8.1, came with MS Office, is convertible between tablet and notebook, runs an Intel Atom quad-core processor, runs FULL windows desktop software AND runs all Windows metro apps, runs any windows browser you wish (including Safari if you desire). It also has a Micro SD slot and USB connectors... and an actual keyboard when I need it.

No... it doesn't have as many apps as my iPad, but it has all that I need and that is more than made up for by all the desktop software that I can run.

AND IT HASN'T CRASHED ONE SINGLE TIME. My iPad is now a nice dust-collector. And... not to mention... my Transformer only cost about HALF of what a new iPad costs. 🙂🙂🙂🙂

I haven't looked back but the half a dozen emails a day of posts from this thread remind me of my former pain.. and how much of a relief it's been. I wish I hadn't spent a small fortune on apps but it's the cost of an expensive lesson. I'll never buy any hardware again that is tied to a closed O/S. There's NO WAY to fix any problem. You are at their mercy.

As the owner of an iPad 1, I can tell you that Apple has been ignoring this for years. Just look at the start of this thread. Now my iPad is for my kids to do whatever they want with it, and I have been enjoying my Galaxy Tab 10.1 for the last 4 months. When you get used to Android (and it doesn't take long) you find it weird that you ever liked iOS.

I own an iPad One. It has crashed for years. This is not a new problem. The problem on my tablet has definitely gotten worse over time. At yhis point the browser is basically useless. It is barely open before it crashes. I can only use the apps snd any of those with video crash someti.es too. I think we nred some media coverage to get action from Apple. Anyone know how to make that happen?

i have the same problemm with IPAD one. Someone asked it there was something we could do to get apple to recognize the problem.

There are a coupe of alternatives

1) Have a national Bring it back to Apple Day where everyone brings their IPAD to a local store and the media is alerted. That would quickly get their attention

2) Have a youtube video of the crashing problem and post it. let everyone of this forum know of its availablity and to ask they forward to friends. This also would get Apple's attention

Both of those are pocketbook solutions, which are always the best

Not the same, unlike the windows platform, IOS is still on the same platform and compiler. The biggest difference is that iOS have implemented more I/O perhaps without a comprehensive and costly regression test plan. In my humble opinion, our biggest problem is us! From a consumer's point of view, name another item where we keep buying the product that is broken before we get it in our hands and our complaints are never addressed.

We accept the smoke and mirror support for these devices and continue giving them money for the newest/shiniest gadgets time and time again.

I am not ranting, just stating facts as a consumer who is disillusioned with the big fruit and is recommending everything else but this manufacturer to my friends and clients. Make no mistake, this attitude has only come about in the past three years or so of my 35 plus years in the industry.

I bought my iPad one when the two was launched so I have no issue that my machine is not cutting edge.

If I drop or damage my device or it gets stolen is a fact of life.

My BIG unforgivable issue is that Apple have rendered my safari browser useless through a software update they chose to introduce. If they were fixing bugs fine but they introduced a huge one and their attitude is buy the latest machine and start the same cycle again.

Once burnt twice shy!
