iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

I also have been enjoying this feature from Apple with my iPad2 without any useful support from them and junked the pad. With each release of iOS I made an unsuccessful attempt to use it without success, however with 7.1.1 I must admit that for two days of browsing it hasn't crashed yet, but I am not holding my breath.

Give this upgrade a try even though nothing official in release notes about Safari issues.

Good luck.

This reply isn't to anyone in particular on this topic (I'm not willing to take the time to read all the posts) but I did want to weigh in. I held off on buying an iPad Mini for months after discovering this ongoing thread when doing my research. When the Mini was offered for sale ($50 off) in February of this year, I decided to take the risk despite what I had read here. Well, I use my iPad Mini countless times daily and I've not had the crashing problems that some of you have reported. So, I'm not sure what to think now. If it were an operating system issue, it seems like all of us should have the problem. Thus, is it a hardware problem that is limited to a (relatively) few unlucky folks? If it were a huge, widespread problem, it seems like we would be hearing about a product recall or countless news reports about customer dissatisfaction but I've not seen that and I catch a lot of news.

The other thing 7.1.1 seems to do is slow load time down to dial up speed. 30 minutes or longer to load any page using Safari. Chrome, on the other hand, loads fast. But the Safari browser is now apparently a dial up browser that crashes multiple times/hour. So, Safari has been rendered totally useless by Apple, and it does seem at this point that the Dafari problem is a permanent glitch. Since it's the default browser, I would urge anyone without a tablet to avoid the iPad at all costs...

That's just a silly comment, made (understandably) based on emotion and frustration rather than logic. Every software product and hardware platform on the planet has ups and downs in the development process. After updating to iOS 7.1.1 this week, I've encountered a couple of Safari crashes on my previously rock-stable iPad 3, as well as the Web page-loading slowdown. I've alas seen the App Store and App installations slow to a crawl. I had to download and re-install Dropbox for iPad four times over a 24-hour period before the installation finally worked. At the same time, I had no problems surfing the Web or downloading and installing Dropbox on two Macs and my iPhone 5S.

I've been an Apple customer since 1978 and have seen many, many software and hardware problems come and go. There is an ebb and flow to product development at all companies, even Apple. Employees come and go, teams expand and shrink, and skillsets and expertise change as employees grow and learn their trade and the products. It's called life.

I have no doubt that this is a problem with this update version that will be corrected. It is temporarily frustrating, but it shall

...oops...shall pass. You might avoid this temporary issue by buying another company's product but I assure you — you will encounter different set of unique idiosyncrasies and problems that, in all likelihood, will be worse than anything the Apple Gods will throw at you.

By and large, Apple has been a reliable and trustworthy company that will get this fixed. And if even if ine model of product x, y, or a turns out to be a turkey as once happened to me with a PowerMac G3, it may not be cause to jump ship. I also judge companies on their overall performance and batting record as well as each individual product or software update and overall, Apple and its products are excellent and extremely reliable.

So, don't panic and don't get frustrated. File a bug report online at www.apple.com/feedback, take an hour or a day to step away if you can, enjoy the sunshine and your family, and come back to tackle the problem with a fresh attitude, renewed energy and a less emotional approach. You'll live longer, and probably be more successful with your troubleshooting too.

Interesting advice. My iPad1 started to crash more than two years ago. Since it is certain that Apple will solve the problem, how much longer do you think I should keep waiting?

Well, when my iPad 1 started crashing three years ago, I erased it, reinstalled iOS 5 and then started re-installing Apps from scratch, one at a time, and never had any more problems with it. About five months after that, I bought the then new iPad 3 and erased the old iPad 1'yet again to restore it as new and gift it to my sister who has not reported any problems with it. The thing is, I recognized the limits of a generation one device with just 256MB of memory and realized that powerful new Apps and the computing I was doing with it quickly outstretched the pwerformqnce capabilities and I moved on. These are not 10- nor maybe not even five-year devices. They are what they are. At some point, you go with the flow and move forward.

IPad Air. Latest iOS. Regular crashes with Safari. Less than five tabs open. Various sites trigger the crash. Watch list on eBay is a major offender. iPad has been restored. Memory reclaimed by system reset. THIS IS PLAINLY NOT GOOD ENOUGH APPLE! This has been going on for many months. It has a negative impact upon the companies reputation. Please fix this ASAP...
