Completely dead ipad - will not charge

Hope someone can offer suggestions

this is a 64MB wifi ipad I have had since 30th April. I love it and it has been excellent until today.

I had used it yesterday evening and it still had 55% showing on the battery - so it was just switched off overnight and left (no wifi running there is no signal where I am as we are away from home in our motorhome and I only charge it when it drops to 20%). Now it has been being charged bias it's mains lead via an inverter

When I looked this morning it was dead - I thought it odd but plugged it in to charge - only there was not the usual start up just nothing. And nothing still later

as I not home I do not have access to a mains socket or my computer

any thoughts would be appreciated

Hi,

Try pressing SLEEP/WAKE button and HOME button *at the same time* to force it restart for 2 or 3 times and see if it can turn on. Sometime it's just turn off by itself (happens more frequently for me esp when the battery is low) and we have to force it to start again.

Hope this helps,

Thank you so much for the suggestion of pressing the two buttons together. Mine finally came back to life. When it did it was 68% charged. I have no idea what happened. I have the iPad 3 since it came out in March of 2012 and this is the first time that something like this has happened. It worked fine last night and when I went to use it this morning it was dead. I had tried different chargers and nothing until I tried the two buttons as suggested. I live in FL and it was also indoors at about 72 degrees when this happened, so I know it's not the the cold weather that caused this. No clue why this happened, but am glad to have it back.

I had the problem quite a few of you have been discussing in regards to your Ipad devices be used until the device shuts down from a low battery. I plugged my ipad into the electrical outlet and then the ipad would show the red dead battery, then show the apple icon, and then immediately shut down and would complete the same steps repeatedly for a few hours. I was getting so frustrated. I then happened upon the idea of the power source. After much trial and error it was quite an easy fix to rectify this problem I was experiencing. Apple has a few different wall plugs for there devices and each has a different volt or watt output. For the ipad you have to use a 12W plug. The rectangular Plug. Once I realized this my ipad rebooted right away and I have full use of my device. Hope this helps.

I too had the dead iPad problem, cold, dark, useless. After charging fruitlessly (it was ALREADY charged when it died, but I couldn't think of anything else except pressing home or sleep button endlessly), checked this forum this morning and saw the two button solution...which worked! Thank heavens.

My only worry -- will it continue working? Was it the cold (and it's VERY cold right now here in Connecticut) that did it? Will it happen all over again? Worry, worry, worry. I'd love to hear from people who have used this solution about the duration of the fix!

I need help.......

My ipad3 isn't charging either. I got new cable, power adapter (12w) and try the home power button and it's still not charging. At fist when I press the home power button, apple logo will show but after 3-4 tries, only the battery logo pop up. No letter how long I press the 2 button, the apple logo is not popping up anymore. Please help....

I set down my tablet (with the youtube app open), which fell asleep in 10 minutes. When I came back, it was dead. Nothing had happened to it, I know it didn't die, it's not responding to the computer or charger, and I can't get it to wake up. I tried the whole two-button thing, several times, for 30 seconds at a time, but it isn't working. I don't get it. Any help?

In my case, I had been keeping my iTunes library on an external drive (not backed up, wah) that failed.

I think my (first generation) iPad has been trying to connect with itunes via wifi when I'm not looking, and running down the battery. And of course my iTunes library has disappeared with my external drive (no actual iTunes tunes)... Is that possible?

I can get no response at all when I'm connected to my Mac Mini.

When I'm plugged into the wall, the apple comes and goes occasionally. If I hold the Home button down long enough, there's screen indicating I should connect by USB to iTunes.

But when I unplug from the wall, the screen disappears and won't come back when I reconnect to the Mini.

The two-button trick ain't working for me, plugged or unplugged.

I've been reviewing all these posts for something that might help - My ipad is still dead.

Very slow flashing apple when plugged into the wall.

Two-button reset doesn't work, plugged or unplugged.

When plugged into the wall, I can hold down the Home button and get a screen with a USB image asking me to connect to itunes.

When I unplug from the wall, the screen goes blank.

When I plug into my Mini, no apple no nothing no matter what.

I guees it's got to go into the shop.

Then tried the Home/Sleep button trick again, this time holding it down indefinitely until it suddenly came back to life, at 99% battery. WTH?

Holly_Dolly's fix worked for me as well. The iPad showed the low battery icon (battery with a small sliver of red on the left side--the bottom--of the battery. I connected the iPad to the charger, but it didn't show that it was charging.

After holding down the home+power buttons the iPad reset (rebooted), but still showed the low battery icon, and no charging icon. Followed the fix above and held both buttons for what seemed to be about 1-2 minutes; the iPad reset twice, showing the low battery icon each time, but I didn't let go of the buttons until finally after the third reset it showed the white Apple logo. The iPad had been plugged in all night, but only showed a 2% charge.

It seems the key is to continue keep both buttons pressed for at least two minutes (while it goes through multiple resets) until the Apple logo finally appears.

My ipad 3 is excibiting the same problems.

I left it on my vehicle overnight and it was really cold. When I brough it inside the red battery logo showed up. I tried charging it up but It did not receive any charge. Now I think my battery completely drained. I tried holding the home and reset buttons (while plugged in) for a long time with no sucess.

No apple logo, no itunes icon, no red battery completely black nada.

I am waiting for the 12W adapter in the mail to see if that will do it.

Any further suggestions would be appreciated. My ipad is out of warranty so I can not take it back to apple (even though I would really like to give it back to them).

I'm so upset. I've had my ipad mini for one year and two months. Last week it just stopped working. I've never dropped it. Never got it wet. I do tech support over the phone and try the hard reset. Then plug it into my computer and iTunes. No response. Bring it to apple store and they repeat exactly what I told them ive already tried. Like I'm an idiot. They say they can replace it for $220. Seriously? The thing cost me $299 brand new. I'm never purchasing another apple product. That's ridiculous considering a lot of other people are having the same issue. I have been a loyal apple customer many years now. Had multiple iPods and two MacBooks. I'm pretty disappointed in them over this.

Hi , I have had the same problem for 4 days now and i read in this forum, that they thought it was something to do with the red battery of death and they realised their ipad was cold to the touch, one said he put his on his laptop to warm through and it started up again

I tried this without success and just as i was going to buy another , i put it on my very hot radiator for around 20 minutes and although i tried the 2 button trick it still wouldnt turn on , it went to the "connect to itunes screen" i thought " what the heck" so i plugged it back into my desktop computer where my backup is and after a couple of minutes it started the formatting, i was gobsmacked as for 4 days i had tried everything i possibly could to get it to come back on without sucess,

bearing in mind, i had connected it to my computer numerous times in the last 4 days and it wouldnt recognise it at all, i waited with it on my lap not daring to move incase it stopped formtting it,it then did a complete backup and i now have my ipad back alive and well

Some people said the Apple shop had said nothing cold be done but try this and maybe you will get yours back too

1. Hot radiator for around 20 mins ( lay it on a tea towel )

2. Press both buttons to see if you can get it to work, if it doesnt , when the connect to Itunes screen comes up, connect it to the computer with the back up installed on it

Hopefully this will work,

Good luck xx
