Can't delete Unwanted Email addresses, Auto-fill in saves them all !

How do I delete Unwanted Email addresses?
Auto-fill in saves them all !
When I start a new email, every email address I've
ever written to pops up (To:) This greatly increases my
chances of sending a new email to the wrong person.
.....there's got to be a way to delete just the addresses
I don't want !....but where & how ?

for the latest posts, you have to have the backup you want to use highlighted before the options are available. Although I have just tried this on an iPhone 4s and it didn't work, the email address still comes up, maybe I have it stored elsewhere that I haven't deleted it yet? I use yahoo mail, and have deleted it from yahoo mail contacts and contacts on my phone as well, and then restored and it still comes up, any suggestions?

This worked great for me! I did have to combine several sets of directions on here though because I am techno-deficient. I also had to pay for the supposedly free program for IBackupBot because it would not let me delete the old addresses without paying for it. I launched ITunes then checked to make sure under Preferences that I did not have automatic syncing checked. Then I hooked up my I phone and when it showed up in the left panel, I right clicked on the phone in ITunes and clicked backup. Then I opened the IBackupbot and under Plugin at the top, I chose recent email addresses then deleted each one manually. Then I chose to reload the backup file in the IBackupbot program, not ITunes and it backed up my phone with the changes. It worked perfectly! I am so glad I was able to do this as I have been disappointed that Apple did not have a solution for this problem. Thank you!

Apple appears to have solved this problem. Have just removed an autostored contact from my Yahoo account on my iPhone by typing in the name as if writing a message, there should be an arrow on the right hand side of the address, touch on arrow, details will come up with a red box 'Remove from Recents', touch on this and all gone. Hope this helps. Just did it and it worked for me.

I did exactly as you did but upon the phone going through the restore process it turned off during reboot and would not turn back on. The phone is 3 months old and in perfect condition btw. I have a 4S. I tried turning it on a number of times and the silver apple would show and then it would **** off again. I pressed the hold and home buttons at the same time for a period of between 10 and 20 seconds and the phone then turned on and completed the restore process and all is fine now (or so it seems). This is the only "failure" problem I've had with the phone to date.

Thanks richtampa, this works well if there is an arrow next to the name of a contact, but more often than not there is no arrow and therefore this process cannot work. But for 'arrowed' contacts it works brilliantly albeit cumbersomely ie. delete one contact at a time as is the usual process with iPhones.

It appears that you have to upgrade to iOS 6 to get this feature. My spouse has iOS 6 and I have iOS 5, and he can delete, but I do not have those arrows on mine. As far as JG179's comment, if there is no arrow, it means that the address is in you phone contacts list, so it won't let you edit you phone contacts from within the mail app--you have to edit it in phone contacts. I will be upgrading to iOS 6 tomorrow, now that I know I can fix this and since the "do not disturb" feature is so cool (and the Google Maps app works so well). No more procrastination for me!
