MP3 icon no longer displays artwork in finder

Hi there,

I'm not sure if this started since iTunes 9.2 or 10.6.4, but MP3 icons - in my documents folder, for example - don't display the artwork for the file anymore. I just see the 'musical notes' generic symbol instead. Even when I quicklook the item, it plays back, but again without the specific artwork for that file.

If I open the file in iTunes, the artwork is presented, however. Outside of iTunes in finder windows or folders, there's no artwork. This used to work until very recently, so I don't know what's changed. Can the finder no longer read MP3 artwork outside of iTunes?

Same problem here, but running 10.6.3 not .4

It seems to stick sometimes but not always. I got it to stick the last time by adding some ID3 tags AFTER adding the artwork, and then also trying to convert the ID3 tags to a different version. Don't know which step make it stick but they stuck...

strangely though, copying the file from its location in the finder to somewhere else resulted in the icon to no longer show the artwork... very strange.

Same here. This issue is driving me absolutely nuts!

Everything was working fine a few hours ago before I updated Itunes to 9.2. Then, my artwork stopped displaying correctly in both Finder and Quick Look.

I have completely uninstalled Itunes 9.2 and reinstalled Itunes 9.1.1. IT DOES NOT HELP.

The Apple/Itunes people need to get this fixed asap. I've spent a lot of time organizing and adding album art to all of my music files. It's really annoying me to not have the artwork displayed.... By the way, I want to note that when I transfer the files to another laptop running Windows (without Itunes 9.2), the artwork shows up just fine in the folders and in all the music players (MediaMonkey, Windows Media Player, etc). So far, it seems as though only Finder and Quick Look are affected...

I won't repeat myself, except to say that this issue isn't confined to 10.6, which is why I posted a response in the general iTunes forum.

Suffice it to say, it's not a metadata problem, but in the method in which the Finder gets the resources to draw the previews. It's not directly from the files' metadata, as one might assume, but from the artwork cache that 9.2 either isn't writing completely, or the Finder isn't reading completely.

So... In my last post I said that I completely deleted itunes 9.2, installed itunes 9.1 and the problem was still there.

I had some other issues with my MacBook anyway, so I decided to go ahead and use the recovery CD to reformat it to factory settings... It is now back to the way it was when I first bought it: running Mac OS 10.6.3 and itunes 9.1. Guess what? Album art issue is gone! I see all the album art icons in their glory!!! Now, I'm going to leave it like this and NOT upgrade anything until I see Apple address/acknowledge the issue and release a fix.

It took a few hours of my time to reformat to factory settings, to reinstall my programs, and to tweak all my application preferences. I wouldn't recommend doing it if this mp3 album art issue doesn't annoy you TOO much; however, if there are other problems wrong with your Mac anyway, go for it! =P

I brought this up on iLounge.com, as a comment on their review of iTunes 9.2. I got the following response:

"+Bob Brown (#18): Although I’ve heard several other reports of the same thing, it doesn’t seem to be a problem everywhere. We had no album art issues on any of our test machines or even our own personal iTunes libraries, even across multiple platforms. Although our personal libraries are all on Mac OS X, we do put iTunes through the paces on Windows as well. The artwork conversion process is likely the culprit, and the artwork itself may still be fine with only the cache having been corrupted. If you delete the “Album Artwork” folder from your iTunes library this will cause iTunes to re-generate the cache of all of the artwork you’ve added manually, which should still be embedded in the files themselves. Artwork that was downloaded by iTunes automatically will have to be downloaded again, however, as this does not get embedded."+

I have not tried this solution yet (I am not at my home computer), but I thought that I would pass this information along.

I just gave this a try - deleted, and let iTunes build the cache (you have to wait until it is finished)

It doesn't work - I used Get album artwork, which works. However when I embed into the album with an applescript, or if I manually copy it to the whole album, the files still show up with no artwork in Finder.

Moreover, because this didn't work, I highlighted the whole album and cleared the artwork, and I also used the "Clear downloaded artwork", but the tracks still showed up has having artwork in iTunes. I did this 3 times before the artwork went away. This suggests to me that iTunes is very confused indeed.

Already reported to apple.
but on the plus side, iTunes scrolling is now wicked fast, and the issue with Music Videos being grouped as "Unknown album" is now fixed.
