MP3 icon no longer displays artwork in finder

Hi there,

I'm not sure if this started since iTunes 9.2 or 10.6.4, but MP3 icons - in my documents folder, for example - don't display the artwork for the file anymore. I just see the 'musical notes' generic symbol instead. Even when I quicklook the item, it plays back, but again without the specific artwork for that file.

If I open the file in iTunes, the artwork is presented, however. Outside of iTunes in finder windows or folders, there's no artwork. This used to work until very recently, so I don't know what's changed. Can the finder no longer read MP3 artwork outside of iTunes?

Thanks for posting up their response, BobMBrown!

But I don't think this is the reason why we are experiencing the problem. I'm actually not an iTunes user. I use MediaMonkey (running via Parallels to update my mp3's and sync my iPod/iPhone). I don't have any songs under my iTunes library, or even use iTunes. I updated iTunes just because it was one of the packages in the software update. So in my case, it has nothing to do with any folder in iTunes. Besides, we have all stated that it's not so much a programs of the album art not showing up in iTunes, it's that they don't show up in Finder and Quick Look.

Hello,

I just would like to report that, i have the same issue "MP3 icon no longer displays artwork in finder" but for me this is since the upgrade to OSX 10.6.4 (Snow). It does not come from iTunes.

I have also upgraded to iTunes 9.2 thinking it might fix the problem, but it didn't.

On my MacBook I don't have this problem but it has not been updated to 10.6.4

Thanks to all to report this to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/imac.html

Well on my MBP I have yet to update to 10.6.4, but have updated to iTunes 9.2 and no artwork in finder from embedded file. I used an apple script from Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes called Embed Artwork because iTunes does not embed the artwork if you auto download from Amazon (shame on apple once again) and it worked great in iTunes 9.1.1. But since 9.2... nada. I've been an apple fan for sooo long, but as of lately, many, many disappointments. Just what MTV did to music, iPhone is doing to computing. Bottom line strikes again in good ol' corp USA.

Ok so i was having this issue also.. I had download a bunch of new music from itunes. OSX 10.6.4 with itunes 9.2. None of the cover art would show in mac finder as everyone has stated.. Well since my new music cost me money and i usually download a few everyday i stopped. Reformatted OS drive and reinstalled snow leopard. Did all the updates except OSX 10.6.4 and itunes 9.2. All the music i had recently downloaded showed in finder with the cover art like it should, and even the ones i added my own artwork to showed up.

This is definitely an issue in one of the updates, either OSX or itunes. But im not going to update either at this time to find out. Im hoping they fix it soon as im not going to purchase anymore music till its solid again.

Also there seems to be other issues between the two updates, one being anything flash. Seems to crash often as it never has before. And things wont display correctly, just another reason to wait. I know this isn't the post for that but i just wanted to throw that out there.. ISO 4 for IPhone seems to be suffering as well. My phone is very glitchy now. Safari 5 isn't any better either.. Hate to say it but i think they rushed all these updates out the door to release IPhone 4 and other things on time..

I hope Apple gets back on the "cause it just works" kick.. Thats why i went Mac.

I feel this is a 10.6.4 and/or Finder issue. The artwork appears in iTunes when the song is played, just not in finder. In my case, most of the mp3 files are not in the iTunes catalog at all, I don't see how this can be related to itunes cache. Happens on my mini, iMac, and MacBook, and started after each was updated to 10.6.4.
I used both Jaikoz and Tag and Rename (running under Wine Bottler) to add artwork to my mp3s. Another weird issue, sometimes the first file displays artwork in preview when the file is selected, but none display the puny artwork to left of file name. That is in column view, icon view is the same, sometimes first file displays artwork, sometimes not.
