Newest Version of iTunes and Windows Logo problem

I just tried to download the newest version of iTunes, but I get a warning about how it does not meet Windows Logo requirements and how it could change my entire computer system. Can this happen?! My iTunes is an older version and it has been working fine, up until now. When I try to open iTunes now I get this message "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close". I can't even charge my iPod.

I've had similar issues on this Lenovo in the past (it's an old work laptop of Helen's that I inherited). Maybe the same trick I used might help with that.

Go into your User accounts control panel. Click "Change the way users log on or off". Check the "use the Welcome Screen" checkbox and then click "Apply options".

Try logging off again. Are you able to log back in to the new user account via the Welcome Screen?

Okay, back in the usual user account, let's try steadily working through the procedures from the *User-specific troubleshooting* section of the following document, checking to see if iTunes will launch after applying each procedure:

[iTunes for Windows XP: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1421]

Any joy with any of those procedures, Diane?

I had some joy, briefly. I went into the Troubleshooting guide, I did what was asked of me under "iTunes for Windows in Windows XP" and deleted the file entitled "SC Info.sidb". I restarted. I went into iTunes and it opened for me, without incident. I went into the iTunes store and purchased a few songs. I plugged my iPod into my laptop and as it tried to synch it, I got the usual message of iTunes has encountered a problem and then it closed. So, the new songs did not even get onto my laptop.

Not sure where to go from here.

Try playing a few of those songs in iTunes, Diane ... do you get asked to authorise them? If so, and if you do, are you able to sync to the iPod without the crash?

... or does trying to play them crash your iTunes?

(Wondering if we've got an issue with purchased songs causing the issues causing the errors. The new empty library in the other user account would not contain any of the songs, so we didn't get an error there. Clearing the iTunes configuration file, as per the article, fixes some of the issues with the old songs hence we started getting a succesful launch in the old account without the objc.dll error.)

I tried plugging my iPod in again, nada!Same error message. As soon as I try to sync the iPod, the iTunes program crashes on me.

Doublechecking something. Now we've got iTunes launching again in the usual account, is anything unusual happening when you go to launch iTunes now? In particular, does the iTunes license agreement run every time you launch iTunes?

Hi there, the iTunes license agreement does not show up. I went into iTunes, played a few songs there on my laptop, including the new ones I downloaded last night and everything was fine. I perused the iTunes store. No problems. I just plugged my iPod into my laptop again to put the new songs on to it, and I got the error message again. Clearly the problem is with the iPod being synched with iTunes. I used my iPod at the gym this morning with no problems, so it is working fine. I just am unable to recharge it (the battery won't last much longer I assume) or put new songs on it.

Okay ... that makes it less likely to be a preferences files issue. (If that particular set of device preferences is damaged, the iTunes license agreement usually runs every time iTunes is launched.)

By way of experiment ... if you switch to manually managing content in the usual user account on iTunes, are you able to transfer the new music across to the ipod?

[Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535]

(I'd start by just trying to transfer a single new file across ... does it make it there, or do we get the crash?)

I'm not able to even attempt manually managing any content. I printed off the information on how to do this, however, the first thing that needs to be done is to connect the iPod to the computer and this is when iTunes crashes. I am unable to do anything from there. As soon as I plugged it into my laptop, I get the error message.

Okay ... prior to plugging the iPod in, launch iTunes and go "Edit > preferences". In the Devices tab, check "Prevent iPhones, iPods and iPads from syncing automatically" and click OK.

Are you able to connect without the iTunes error now, Diane? If so, are you able to switch to manual management now?

(At the very least, if we can stop iTunes from crashing when the device is connected, we can at least get the poor thing charged up ...)
