another bug in ios4!
you cannot pair a bluetooth keyboard with ios4 because ios4 will not display the pairing number unless you press enter and when you do that you have only a microsecond to read the number that you were suppose to type in. DUMB! 5/5 stars for DUMB programming.
you might get lucky guessing that number if you are good at guessing lottery numbers!
I was able to pair my Apple silver keyboard (latest release) with iPhone 3GS with iOS 4. Here are the steps:
1. Unpair keyboard from iMac. On iMac, click Apple -> System Preferences -> Bluetooth -> Click on keyboard -> Click on Preferences button (next to + and - at bottom left) -> Disconnect. Then, click paired on right pane and click - (next to + on bottom left).
2. Remove both batteries from keyboard for 10 sec. Then, put them back.
3. On your iPhone 3GS, go to Settings -> General -> Bluetooth -> On.
4. Press and hold power button on keyboard for 2 seconds.
5. "keyboard" will show up on phone. Press relevant numbers on keyboard and enter. Now keyboard is paired with phone.
6. To unpair from phone, click right arrow next to keyboard (from Bluetooth menu) and say Forget this device. Confirm.
7. To re-pair to iMac, do steps 2 and 4 above. Then using mouse, click on bluetooth icon on top right (next to wireless indicator). Select "Set up bluetooth device".
8. Keyboard will show up on the list. Click on it and say continue. Follow instructions.
Same for me. I have an iPhone 3G running the new iOS 4.0, and Apple's original (non-aluminum) bluetooth keyboard. The keyboard works fine with my Macbook Pro.
The original Apple bluetooth keyboard is not compatible with iPhones.

UPDATE: I looked at the fine print on Apple's website; apparently bluetooth keyboarding does
NOT work with iPhone 3G (but it
does work with iPhone 3GS, ...
