The answer is so simple - download the Goodreader app (it costs very little) and transfer your files to it. You can email them to yourself at your leisure, or transfer them through iTunes on your computer etc., Goodreader iis a much superior app, with an excellent file management system, and the ability to change a file name to anything you want. Search the apps store for this and read alll about it. It is worth every penny and lots more besides.
I just got an Ipad 2 so I'm probably on the latest OS. My experience has been all I need to do is go to ITUNES and click File, Add File to Library, to add my pdf files. Then when I sync to my Ipad it uses the file name for the title instead of the metatdata title that is embedded in the pdf. Somewhere in the posts I saw a person who was having trouble with iBooks changing the book title back to the metadata title. This has not happened to me. Maybe an OS version issue.
To permanently (and easily) change the metadata title in a pdf, I found this cool freeware app - BcCyPDFMetaEdit.
I use Windows 7 on my desktop. Probably there is a pdf metadata editor for Mac also.
You are missing the point. IT USED TO WORK AND NOW IT DOESNT AND APPLE NEEDS TO FIX THAT. Using another product is not a solution.
I may be but the point is that Apple have still not fixed it. And, when they do, it is, in most respects, inferior to Goodreader.
Apple really just needs to fix it so when I rename a PDF Title in ITunes... it displays the same on my iPad 2 and does not chnage when I select it. It's stupid to think anyone should have to buy anything and go through any amount of steps, just to retain the title of a PDF just so I can find it without having to open every single PDF to see what it is... The iPad PDF viewer is awesome as is, so another reason that I shouldn't need any other PDF apps.
I should have done my homework before buying such an expensive phone; now Im stuck with this iphone. I should NOT have to buy a third party app to read pdf files properly. As soon as my contract is up im selling this and buying an android.
You do not have to buy third party apps to read PDF's properly. However, if you want to access them again without difficulty then that is a separate matter!
The iBooks app doesn't use the file name, but rather the PDF title as it is indicated in the PDF file itself. iBooks doesn't permit you to edit the PDF file, but you can do that on a computer. The OS X Preview app, Automator, and iTunes all provide a way to alter the title of a PDF (as do most of Adobe's products).
It's not really a matter of Android versus iOS since the Android PDF tools pretty much all do the exactly same thing.
What you are noticing is that some people that produce PDFs don't bother with giving them titles.
The problem is, when I rename the PDF on my PC or through iTunes, when I sync everything looks greats. My PDFs are named correctly, but then when I open it ... POOf now my manual is call 109smW002 instead of what I had renamed it 5000 Service Manual. So now I have to search through my manuals looking for some crazy file name, instead of the nice neat organized name I gave it. I love iBooks and the PDF viewer is great, I just want a fix from Apple so that when I rename a PDF, it stays what I named it.
Any advice appreciated.
Nate
Renaming the file does not change the PDF title. Using iTunes, go to the Books area and find your PDF (assuming you have synced with iTunes). Select the PDF file, then select File > Get Info from the menu.
Switch to the Info tab in the Info dialog and change the "Name" field to something different (what you want it to appear as in iBooks), and the "Artist" field in the dialog is the PDF author field.
Click "OK" to save the metadata changes and then sync with your iPad.
Adobe Acrobat can do the same thing to PDF files, and there's an Automator action in OS X called "Modify PDF Metadata" that you can use too.
Thanks - that worked. It's a lot to d when I have so many work manuals to go through and do this to over 150. I wish there was a batch mode for renaming OR it would accept the "rename" I gave it by right clicking on the PDF and going to rename on my PC. Is it strange that iBooks initially took the name I gave it as I stated, and then only changed to the PDF Title as I open the PDF?
I appreciate the info! Huge help even if I do have to go through each individual PDF.
Sincerely,
Nathan
There are a wide number of command-line tools (like psutils) that can do this, as can Apple's own Automator application (use the "Change PDF Metadata" item)
Hallo, send the pdf-file via email and then change the titel on your mac. Then send it again via email and store it in ibooks. Before you have to delete the old document in ibooks!
I want to use my iPad INSTEAD of the computer, not in addition to. Changing the filename in iBooks WITHOUT having to use your computer should be a basic function IMO... What's going to happen once everything is in the cloud??
If there are not too many, email them to yourself and open them in the very inexpensive but fantastic Goodreader app and then change the name (as often as you want) within that app.
