Iphone 3G OS4 problems

Just downloaded and installed the OS4 for my 16gb Iphonr 3G had no errors or anything installing it like some of the other guys have posted BUT!.... once installed my iphone has been very slow only word i can use to discribe it is "lagy" my iphone has only got like 6gb out of the 16gb used so it shouldnt be that i dont have many apps installed But why this lag? Once i click the home button to open the unlock screen 20 seconds later it will finally open i cant use my phone until this is fixed.

Mail: Just checked my mail inbox to find 2000+ emails which i have already deleted on the iphone and now ive got to go through and tick every single email to delete it wheres the "select all" button? the OS before OS 4 had this? and no way of getting emails which i have deleted back? once i click delete they are gone forever unlike the old OS it would put them in a deleted folder which i can click "empty" so it would be good if they could bring that back in the next update.

Thanks,

I recently received a carrier update (in Australia from OPTUS 7.0 to OPTUS 8.1) and since this time, I haven't had a reboot issue and also the battery doesn't seem to get anywhere near as hot. I hope this may help others to fix their problem (though it sounds like it might not help everyone).

To get the update, I went into Settings/General/About and it asked whether I wanted to update.

THE UPDATE ERASED EVERYTHING ON MY PHONE! --- THAT I'VE HAD FOR OVER 2 YEARS.

150+ family photos, tons of contacts, memos, texts, --- everything gone!! *** APPLE!!

This is outrageous ---- SUPPORT JUST APOOLOGIZED & couldn't help me!! Using a new computer, I followed the update to the tee --- took well over 3 hours and at end, worked fine --- but said the update completed by it couldn't backup my phone --- no options --- damage was done!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I have loved my iPHONE but this completely takes away those feelings. APPLE MANAGEMENT -- YOU NEED TO CONTACT ME as I'm about to go nuts in my large social media network and absolutely blast you for this. HORRIBLE!!

4.0 was terribly slow, 4.1 seemed faster at first but after some usage it really starts to crawl. I changed some options to make it a little less slow, but very often keyboard input will still lag.

Here's what I did, can't really say for sure what works best

One-off
-delete as many text conversations as possible
-delete as many apps as possible (down to 3 screens from 7)
-delete as many photos as possible
-don't use the folders function from 4.0
-turn off notifications
-turn off pushmail
-limit mail to only last 25 mails (least possible)
-I disabled exchange mail, that seemed to slow down a lot

*every now and then*
-reboot the thing (daily, every other day)
-delete safari cache, cookies and history
-check in settings, some apps allow you to delete stuff as well

always
-When you are done with Safari, close all windows, including the last one so it only shows an open page

So this basically *****. Still contemplating going back to 3.x. I'll lose all my conversations and probably face app incompatibility but I'd rather have a snappy phone that does less then a phone with tons of apps at this annoying speed.

I hope everyone on this discussion thread is aware that 4.2 is coming out in the next few days to upgrade all iPhones. Apparently, It has been tested on 3G phones and shown to have addressed all the problems on those phones. So, this thread should be redundant very soon. Be on the lookout for the upgrade. And it might serve you to go looking for the testing results on the web. I'd send a link here but I deleted it. One of them I saw was a U-Tube demonstration. Let's hope it's true. I have two 3G iphones that I've been holding off upgrading. The 3Gs I have, worked fine with the upgrades, with no problems.

Really? All the problems? Pretty bold statement.
Please direct us to where that has been shown to be true. And don't include this video that all the Mac sites have been showing which proves pretty much nothing ( http://bit.ly/cQJ3It).
I hope that's not what you're referring to and that you have other information.

Jon, they said the same about 4.1 so I want to see it first this time. I personally feel any 4.x version is probably too much for the 3g, so I am sceptical about 4.2 as well. They are only adding more and more stuff with each version although personally I could live with what 3.1.3 had to offer. For Apple it is ofcourse more convenient to have one IOS version for as many devices as possible, but I feel 3.1.3 should have been an endpoint for 3G. Maybe some security fixes but 4.x is clearly a bridge too far as i experience on a daily basis. I once loved this device, now I'm swearing at it on daily basis because the input is so slow I keep messing up my passwords and other input.

Ever since I updated my Iphone 3GS with the OS4 update, my iphone has been slow, and freeze's often. I get frustrated at it at times and I turn it off . I'm a big fan of Iphone's - I think they are amazingly built devices, but I cannot accept an OS4 update and it's glitch's caused to my Iphone. I have an opportunity to upgrade and extend my contract with AT&T for another 2years, which I will be doing, but this time I will get the New Blackberry Touch,,,

Too bad Apple,
you need to get OS4 fixed, it's not pennies we spend on you.

Yes the 3G is two generations back but someone at Apple should have known that the OS4 would not work well on the 3G. I didn't care that I was behind before because my 3G worked great! Now it is a joke all because of the OS4 which I didn't need anyway. Apple blew it big time and I'm ready to defect! Fine, my phone is old. I would have been TOTALLY ok with Apple saying that this upgrade wouldn't work with 3G. Now I have a phone barely functional and I certainly don't trust any of the "fixes" I read here to make my phone better.

I just downloaded 4.2 for my 3G.. I never updated it before... Unfortunately I did not read before downloading, and now I find out this, and this! http://news.yahoo.com/s/ytechwguy/20100712/tc_ytech_wguy/ytech_wguytc3098#mwpphu-container . What is worse, my phone is a Victim of "Wifi Greying" No Wifi for me 😟 I will go to apple tomorrow, and I also contacted a Class Action Attorney. After seeing how many people have been affected by this, I figured someone needed to take action against apple to get this resolved. If you are interested in joining the Class Action, let me know.

I have 4 Apple Computers, Apple TV, and My Iphone.. I love Apple products, but I am madder than **** that this has happened, and "Big Mac" has done nothing about it.
