In my 20 years history with an Apple's product this is the worst upgrade ever. My 3G iPhone was working great until I upgraded it with OS4. After 56 hr of waiting for the 280Mb to be finally loaded to my phone (sic!) I finally have a privilege to personally experience this OS NIGHTMARE: from incredible slow respond, screen locking and constant freezing in all windows to now frequently interrupted calls. Under all circumstances I would consider this OS to be a substantial downgrade or perhaps just a bad joke. To make it worst, according to Apple Tech Support, there is now way back. I want to move back to the previous version since OS4 have nothing to offer for 3G users beside turning a perfectly good product in to a pile of crap. Did Apple test this upgrade prior sending it out? Why can we go back?

My problem was similar to hung on install and became a nightmare. I finally got it to work, but all my apps have lost their data and it literally appears as though my iphone 3G 16GB is a "new" phone (usage meters all reset, icons relocated). Now I'll have to sync again and pray that all my apps and everything else comes back.

Seriously, if you have NOT upgraded to OS 4...don't yet.

I don't have slowness issues but I whenever I try to open any 3rd party app it closes immediately. Only the built-in iPhone apps work. ***!?

I was having this same exact issue (plus most of my photos and all of my songs were gone from the iPhone). What you need to do is accept the new iTunes terms and condition/re-authorize your Apple ID in iTunes or the App Store. If you're not near the computer you usually sync with, try using your iPhone to look for updates to any of your current apps (updating any app forces you to review the new iTunes terms and conditions). Once you agree to the new terms the 3rd party apps should be working again (at least that's what happened for me).

If none of your apps need an update and you want this fixed ASAP, just DL a new free app (you can obviously delete it if you don't need it) and it'll also force you to review the terms and conditions. I guess some Apple DRM is what's causing your apps to close immediately, and it's fixed once terms and conditions are accepted.

Hopefully this helps, I was definitely freaking out about this earlier today, and the Apple support peeps didn't have a definite fix (though they suggested iTunes authorization might be a problem).

Did the update to my 3G, all went fine, backup didn't take long, update happened just fine, connected authorised all good, all except that once updated it runs about 80% slower then before, games on the phone respond like frogger on an Atari STe 420 (you're probably all too young to remember that console) but lets just say I'm less than impressed. It begs the question, why would apple release an update for the 3G without fully testing and realising that althoguh this u[pdate works on a % of phones (my best friend has no issues his runs just fine with the update) it also completely ruins the remaining %.

Lets just hope they realise their mistake and release a 3G patch soon.. if their intention is to make us update then they'll loose a customer in me.. anyone who deliberatley ruins a perfectly good os in order to derive sales from a new product is well out of order in my book.

I have tried downloading OS4 for my 3Gs iPhone. It's been downloading for 4 hours, and now won't even boot up. The phone has become unusable. Steve Jobs, get your head out of your rear, and service your existing customers instead of always trying to create some new buzz. You're alienating us! How can I get back to the former iPhone operating system?!? This experience has me considering moving to the Droid.

We desperately need a way to downgrade by Apple or a Fix for this useless new software that do no good for 3G users!!! or a HELP to guide us through something we can do to fix this issue!!! come on, you've turned a perfectly amazing phone into a useless slow hardware!!! or is it a way to make everyone go out and rush to buy the new one!!! well, here's the thing, we won't be receiving it here until the end of the year!!!! and i need to use my phone!!!

With OS4 my iPhone 3G has slowed right down with user experience now very poor. Now feels like an early HTC. Upgrade is not recommended. Im restoring factory original.

I get the distinct impression that the iOS4 update for the 3G does nothing more than try to make us all go out and buy the new iPhone.

I only have a month left on my contract and will be getting a droid phone next.

I have an iPhone 3G and tried to sync to get the new OS 4. When I started to sync my phone, it appeared to start to run the back up. However, 5 hours later it just sat there. I did this 4 times with the exact same outcome. Even rebooted my phone and my Mac Pro with the same result. After reading all the comments about the horrors of the OS 4.0 though, I'm kind of glad I wasn't able to load it onto my 3G. Apple, you need to extensively test your software before releasing it as a "fix" or an "upgrade". I was considering buying the new iPhone 4 but after this episode, I'm beginning to think I should take a good hard look at an Android.

Come on Jobs, get to work. Let's get a bug fix here pronto! Same experience as everyone else, though my 3G is not totally bricked! Never thought I'd ever use the word "brick" on an apple forum. Still love the apple products. I'm confident they will fix this!

Folks, if it's slow all you have to do is "hard reset" twice! push the two buttons at the same time until it reboots. It works, at least with me and a lot of other people on the net.

So get your old phone back the easy way... downgrade to 3.1.3.

Takes a few steps & is FREE (no visit to the Apple Store). Follow closely, you can do it, just give yourself a little time.

For both PC and MAC: to-ios-313

Today I officially downgraded my 3G from 4.0 to 3.1.3 and it works just as before. Familiar icons, speed is back. Sluggishness of iPhone OS4 is not. Just pay attention to all the steps (and video) as there are unique .ipsw (restore) files for 3G versus the 3GS model, each of which are listed at that link.

Apple: I have to check the NOT AS EXPECTED box on 4.0 update. iOS = POS

I was interested to see these posts because I thought to myself, "things sure seem to be launching slower since I upgraded to OS4." I did not lose any notes or apps but I noticed today on the trip home that my iPod app only plays two songs and stops. It did this several times. I have it set to shuffle but it will not play continuously. Also, I noticed that some apps just quit and close. Very frustrating. I'm considering upgrading to a 3GS. Any problems there?
