iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call

After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?

Hi,
nothing new, but I just wanted to say that I have the same problem, and that I am just amazed to see that nothing is made by Apple...
I am surrounded by Apple fans at work, but the more I experience Apple products, the more I see that they are better at communication than at manufacturing reliable products and software... not better than others...

In desperation I took my iPhone 3GS back to Vodafone NZ as it was still under warranty. No problem they said, we'll fix it and have it back within 3-5 business days.

Day 5 rolls around and no contact from Vodafone so down to the store to see what's happening.

After several calls to the warranty guys they finally find my case file and advise the phone cannot be repaired under warranty because of impact damage.

When asked how this issue could be related to impact damage they advise it does not matter - if there is impact damage they won't honour the warranty even if the damage has nothing to do with the problem.

Interestingly there was no sign externally of impact damage or water damage or any other damage when I dropped it in for repair.

It just reboots during 10-15 minute calls. Everything else works fine.

Net result - pay $370 and the phone will be repaired.

So basically, they broke your phone trying to find out what was going on with it. Probably why you didn't hear back from them, they were trying to fix or figure a way out. Then they give you that lame excuse. You should contact Apple Care if it's still under warranty. Tell them you sent it in to Vodafone, with nothing wrong with it other than the reboot issue. If you have an Apple Store you can get to, they can at least check that you've already spoken with Apple Care, and swap out your phone with out question. That's what I did all 4 times I swapped out my phone. Because I've heard even the Genius Bar was giving some people hassles. The first couple of times they gave me the runaround, but as soon as I mentioned that I already talked to Apple Care and a swap was already arranged, they looked it up on their system and swapped out my phone without further questions. You paid for a working phone that stopped working as soon as you updated, and you have warranty still on your phone. You shouldn't have to be dishing out anymore cash to get the phone you originally had, in the working order that you originally had it.

ive found i can make longer calls by moving the phone away from my head a few times during any call, that makes the proximity sensor light up the screen, this helps a lot and in a 30 minute call i didnt have one reboot, it might have been pure luck but hey if anything helps its worth sharing!
i ended up buying another 3gs to make calls on, nearest apple store is too far for me to travel! but if problem persists maybe i will go in the new year.
but for now keep the screen active during calls and you may be lucky.
i also use pc connection software with the affected iphone (logmein) so i can view my two home pcs screens on my iphone "live" and not had a problemw ith reboots so im assuming in my case its just call related.
when i bought my first iphone quite a few years ago i thought apple were the ebst company about but now after this thread/forum i have lost massive amounts of faith in them, considered buying an ipad but would that be another 500 quid and then problems after the warranty is up?

regards dave

Oh man. We are in the lap of some serious charlatans!

Well, I had a crashing 3GS on calls. Call a mobile number via the keypad (not in my address book) and the phone would reboot immediately. Spend more than 15 minutes on an address book call (mobile or landline) and then bang, crash, reboot. Call the same number and then 5 minutes to crash. Call again and then 6 minutes to crash. I used my landline in the end!

I visited the Genius Bar and had a replacement provided, no quibble in a spooky sort of way. I'm not going to divulge the conversation I had with the rep as he knew my phone was refurbished but still replaced it. Suffice to say, he was more than helpful. Does that tell you something? Maybe just a nice guy (he was) or a directive from the big Apple in the sky? Crashing iPhone on calls? "Never heard of that one." "Really, you've never heard of the problem?". "No".

So, when this replacement 3GS is dead, I'm going Windows 7. It even scares me to say that but I'm sick and tired of Apple lying and cheating. Maybe Microsoft have learnt from their lying and cheating and now offer a decent smartphone operating system.

Shame on you Apple. We once respected you and spent many thousands of pounds, dollars or any other currency with you (in my case over £10k). Not anymore my fruity friends. You can take a flying leap as far as the iPhone is concerned.

I still like my Macs though, even if I am forced to spend hundreds of pounds on upgraded applications when I update with leopard. Grrrrrrrrr. OS X changed my professional life and offered 20 days plus of no shutdown stability – this I applaud.

Apple, sit up, take notice, shelve your corporate arrogance and support your customers. Eventually, you will be back to the 5% market share old chaps. Be warned.

Now Apple has replaced my iPhone.
After phone call in july, and after submission of crash report to bugs.apple.com, ( http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11815047#11815047)
I waited for the upgrade as recommended by Apple engineers, with the 4.1 firmware, the problem has become more rare but still exists, immediately after 4.2.1 upgrade, kernel panic returns more
frequent! So I decided to call again, pointing out this thread, my call in July and closed the bug report by engineers as a "known issue", so I have proposed a pay € 29 just to get the new device. I now have a new 3GS 32gb model A1303B without the reboot problem.

Shame on you apple after all these replies and concerns and complaints, move your a**es and fix this deadly issue and save closing vulnerabilities for hackers and start finding a solution for this problem, just be brave Steve Jobs employees and sort this messy problem out or else at least confess what is causing this issue.

Nobody is perfect confess it and find a solution, just close these spreading threads with the clarification cause of the error.

best of Regards for Stevie Jobs the big Brain 😉.

I agree. Steve and Co. really need to get their hands in the air like they really care. A phone without a phone? Doh!

Apple have been great over the years, even with OS9 for Mac crashing at least 15 times a week! OSX solved that more or less and I reckon I've had less than 15 crashes this year on my main work Mac.

Of course human nature dictates that you tell a few people when things are good and many more when it's bad. Just take this forum as an example.

I just get really irritated at the CIA / NSA / MI5 style deny all knowledge tactics. I also understand that this could be catastrophic for Apple. My feeling is that there just isn't a fix through software. That's why most of us receive a replacement. I had to do a round trip of 98 miles to get my 3GS exchanged – another sore point.

I suspect a letter to Steve Jobs from all the subscribers on this forum would be the only way to make him really take notice (not holding my breath though). Either that or we ask Michael Moore or Morgan Spurlock to contact him.

+1,

Only I have an 3G and the reboot is all the time. When I use my Iphone it's every 5 minutes and when it's on the table it takes longer. Thought I could fix it via Itunes recovery, but no. Now I have an Iphone in recovery mode who's not able to restore software because during process it reboots after 5 minutes. And then I get error 14.

With result that I have an non working Iphone for almost a week.

Just thought I'd throw it in there that I've been having this problem too.

Equally annoying is the fact that texting is now a major chore.

[Edit] This thread has had an insane amount of views and replies. Clearly it's not just a minority of users experiencing this problem as somebody in an earlier post mentioned.

I'm having the same problem and it galls me to say it but I'm glad I'm not alone.

My issue now is that I am permanently stuck on 4.1 unless I upgrade the OS on my iMac G5 from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 or higher because I need itunes 10.1 to get above 4.1.

If 4.2 was the magical cure (or 4.3, 4.4, 4.999999) I still wouldn't be able to upgrade without getting 10.5.xx from somewhere. I can't buy 10.6.xx as I need an intel processor for that and I have PowerPC.

Where did it all go wrong??????????
