iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call
After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?
Thought it was only fair to update you all on this, since I was one of the first to post a reply to the initial post confirming the issue.
I just got back from my local telco, Telenor, who handles all support on iPhones sold on their network. They've had my old 16GB 3Gs in for service for the second time, and this time they replaced it with a new(refurb perhaps?) 3Gs 16GB preinstalled with iOS 4.1 and it sure seems to work just fine.
The first time I sent the phone in for repair, they wiped it, reinstalled and returned it in a few days. Same error as before, constant rebooting.
This second time, I included a print out of the activity log from iPhone Configuration Utility quite clearly showing this error occuring several times just before reboot:
Thu Sep 30 10:27:33 unknown CLTM[24] <Error>: CLTM: stale battery temp: now = 1285835251, lastupdate = 1285835004
I'm tempted to believe that the referral to this issue, triggered them to replace my phone.
Same issue here.
Apple support says that, outside the warranty is no other way, unfortunately, as an exchange fee.
For this purpose, estimated 219 EUR.
It's a shame!
17 month old iPhone is no longer usable, thanks to the manufacturer-update!
Is this the expected life of a premium product?
I don't think this is correct. According to the manual, double-clicking the home button only shows the list of most recently used apps, not apps that are running in the background. As far as I can find out, this only is a history of app launches, not a list of background functions. So clearing it would have no effect on how the phone is running.
It's odd, but I cannot find anything about multi-tasking in the IOS 4.2 manual, having searched on "background" and "mutitasking" and finding next to nothing.
Background tasks might well have an impact on the phone's operation but the double-clicked home key is not, as far as I can find, the way to access that stuff.
Hi LawsonStone, you are correct that double-clicking the home button shows recently used apps, not necessarily those still running.
Apps which are allowed to run in the background are background audio, location awareness, VOIP, and up to 10 minutes for an app to complete any (?) task.
If an app is still running in the background then 'x'ing it out of the multitasking list will kill it.
The best way to test issues like this is to reboot the phone and immediately (before running any apps) see if a call is dropped.
I don't know in which Country you live but I guess (like me in NL) in a No-Apple-Store Country. I fully understand your frustration as I had to deal with it for 4 months as well. Finally I was able to swap my phone while on a business trip to Manchester and visit to the local Apple Store.
After a week, I received an invitation from Apple to participate in their customer satisfaction survey on the repair. I have clearly confirmed to them my frustration of Apple not acknowledging this problem and not publicizing a solution to their customers and that swapping phones to (working-)refurbished ones would bring them back to acceptable customer service levels.
So I guess your only option is to visit an Apple Store, refer to this thread and collect your new phone.
Exactly the same problem for me. I upgraded my Iphone 3GS to the latest 4.2 software a few days ago and my phone has consistently re-booted during calls since. Hopefully Apple will get onto this and do an update to fix this as its very frustrating. I love my iphone and think it's wonderful, but obviously not being able to make calls is a fundamental problem!
I have also had this problem since upgrading to IOS 4. I have upgraded to 4.2 and my last reboot completely erased my iPhone. It had to be unlocked in iTunes and restored from backup! Since this came with a software upgrade it should be possible to get it fixed. It is just a matter of putting some effort into it.
"+Does anyone find it "strange" that everytime this thread gets over 100 pages, it gets cut down to about 70-80? Twice I've seen this thread go pass 100 pages, and twice it's been cut down. Hmmmmm. Perhaps there is some validity to the conspiracy theories+."
Eric,
(how do other forum users quote messages in the gray text box. I just copied and pasted the above, changed it to italics but it was not highlighted when I looked at it in preview.)
I have noticed that if you look at this thread WITHOUT LOGGING IN, it has a certain number of pages, but after logging in, the number of pages is substantially reduced. I have no idea why this happens but it seems to be consistent.
BTW, if I had to guess the cause of this problem, I'd say that minionedriver has it: When the battery is warm or the processor is creating more heat than during ideal conditions, iOS 4 cannot communicate with the Thermal Sensor in a "batch" of 3GS' and shuts down.
Also regarding multi-tasking, Trapster is an app used in the US that continues to run in the background and will drain the battery very quickly. I only use it if the iPhone is plugged in.
I just want to add my name to the list. The same problem since I upgraded to iOS4.0. Further upgrades to newer releases didn't fixed the problem. My iphone reboots very often during longer calls. Sometimes it happens that it reboots also when it is alone on the shelf, but this is a very rare occurence.
Like most folk, my phone turns itself off while on a call (within 5 minutes).
However, this is problem is not limited to call-time operations only. Listening to music via the iPhone's iPod (with no other apps running in the background) presents the same problem!!!
Last evening, my phone turned itself off 6 times in the same hour while listening to music. To top it off, my hold/power button does not work anymore so every time my phone goes off, I need to plug in the iPhone USB charger (which, by default, automatically turns the phone back on). Of course, if I am out and about, I might not have access to a power source to plug my phone to whenever it turns itself off so that adds to the aggravation.
But what I found even more peculiar (yesterday afternoon), was the fact that the iPhone turned itself off and on 5 times while charging via a socket in the wall - with absolutely no apps running! The battery was at 50% too when I started charging it so it's not a case of the battery was flat!!!
Now, having experienced this problem for well over 4 months, I have made a couple of observations:
1) Like most folk on this thread have identified, this problem started after the iOS 4 update.
2) The problem, whatever it may be, seems to be instigated by a call.
For example, I was listening to music through the iPhone yesterday evening for about 2 hours, before I received a phone call. Needless to say, the iPhone turned itself off within 5 minutes of the conversation so I had to use the landline phone to phone back the caller.
Once I was done with the call, I turned the iPhone back on to resume listening to my music and within the same hour, it turned itself off 6 times.
Likewise when I was charging my phone yesterday afternoon, there were no problems at all until I received a phone call (which lasted less than a minute because I told my pal I'd phone him back from my landline as I anticipated the iPhone would turn itself off), but not long after the conversation was over, the iPhone turned itself off (and on again - because it was charging) 5 times in the same hour.
So, in my opinion, it seems that the basic operation of the iPhone (i.e. making/receiving calls) seems to trigger this problem. There have been times when I've been able to use every function of the iPhone (listening to music, playing games, browse the net, etc) for hours without any problems - until a phone call is made/received.
So, we live in hope that someday the good people at Apple will come by this thread and look into solving the problem.
If not, I would happily give up folders, multitasking + all of iOS4' bells and whistles by downgrading to the previous operating system in order to regain the full functionality of the phone. Of course, that's if we will be presented with the option to downgrade.
P/S
My pal is having the same problem with his new iPhone 4.
New 3GS from an O2 store. Restored from a backup of my old iPhone 3G running iOS 4.1 and then, since iOS 4.2 had been released between me losing my old 3G and getting the 3GS, I immediately updated to iOS 4.2.
Since then I've now had several instances of the iPhone restarting during a call. Grrr.
