iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call

After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?

Just to add my name on the list with the same rebooting phone call problem on my Iphone 3GS 16gb, iOS4.2.1.

When I put the incoming calls on speaker phone, I seem to manage to get rid of the rebooting. But it is so frustrating that it this isn't solved yet. I tried resetting it, and then setting it up as a new phone, but with no luck.
And this bit that can be very frustraing (especially when using it as in a business situation) and that is that when I get an incoming call and it reboots, there is no trace of who called me, and equally no trace of which number I got a call from. So if it is someone I don't have in my contact list, I simply can't call them back either. Stupid!

This was working find up until iOS4.0 came out. I love my iPhone but this is such a fundamental flaw.

This seems to be happening more and more.

My 3GS was exchanged after a visit to the Genius Bar. Now my mates 8 month old 3GS is starting to crash on calls!

Apple definitely know about this but won't come clean.

I think they will continue to exchange the phones until warranties have expired or there are no refurb units left.

It really is damaging their reputation and I suspect this runs to 100's of thousands rather than an isolated few.

Again, come on Apple, put your hands up and take responsibilty for this premium product. Eventually, we will start migrating to new phones and OS's. Personally, I would protect the major asset that is the App Store.

Hello all,

After weeks of putting up with this issue I called Apple today. The fella sold me $99 worth of AppleCare first but then asked if I'd restored the phone, which I had back to factory defaults. But then he got me to turn the iPhone off, remove the SIM card, turn it back on, turn it off, replace the SIM and turn it back on. I have since made several calls to mobiles and land lines including one call of 15 minutes and it has not rebooted. Here's hoping it was a simple fix that did the trick!

Good luck,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Was this a national Apple telephone line in Australia?

I'm intrigued as I had to travel to Exeter in the UK. The nearest Apple Store (Plymouth) didn't have a Genius Bar. So it turned out to be a 90 mile round trip (probably not far in Aus). It took about 4 hours including travel. The Genius Bar were running very late even though I had booked an appointment. I had to wait an extra 45 minutes.

I think it may be an idea to collate our experiences so we can compare notes. Phone replaced? Phone fixed like yours? No fix? No replacement? Etc, etc...

Would you mind posting again if the problem occurs again.

Cheers,
Rees.

How old was the phone? It sounds like you got a new phone due to European law that gives you extra rights. That's why they were so helpful in Utrecht. Here in the US, if you are out of warranty, it's "tough luck, buster." Their update broke a functioning device, but they simply don't care.

Glad to hear it all worked out for you. I'm just really surprised it took 3 weeks though. When they replaced mine each time, it only took about a day, less if I got a Genius appointment the same day I talked to Apple Care.

The biggest problem is if the moisture indicator is showing that it has been exposed to water: in which case all bets are off and they won't do a thing.

Assuming it's just a bit of a dent / chip then, based on my and others experience, it may depend on whether you're in warranty. If you are, then most people seem to have got a straight exchange for a refurb with few problems. If you're out of warranty then frankly it depends on who you get at the genius bar. Some have refused to swap over, others have got someone who has swapped it out.

I was one of the lucky ones but had to do a bit of shouting before they did it. Having said that I went in fairly soon after iOS4 came out and buggered everything so they may have been less familiar with the issue then. Now they are a few months down the road they may have seen enough that they all just swap them straight over without any hassle.

Anyway hope this helps and good luck with getting it sorted - worth a shot in my opinion if the alternative is living with a phone that doesn't work like a phone for half a year...

Hi all - My second post in this discussion

I have finally got my Iphone 3Gs replaced by the Danish provider TDC Mobil, my IPhone was within warranty. The first time they defaulted it 4.1.2 (which I could have done myself). So after two day it rebooted again on a clean 4.1.2 no backup.

So I shipped it again to TDC with some postings from the discussion and today a little over a week after, I´ve received a brand new one, not a refurb, as far as I can see. Thanks to TDC Denmark, nice gesture from you.

I will write again if I encounter the issue again.

Last statement to Apple/Jobs - Mr. Jobs tear down that wall of arrogance and silence in your company - Replace those handsets - This is an abomination on your company and clear evidence that Apple is infact heading the wrong direction. It didn´t have to come to this.

I will think twice before investing in new hardware from Apple next time.

Sincerely

Kristian Lindgren.

My 3GS has been rebooting ever since I upgraded. I've done restore after restore but still no avail. Man its annoying having to call everyone back and try to explain what happened.

I'm with Vodafone in Australia and bought the phone in Melbourne, just wondering if I should take it back to Vodafone first? Or go straight to Apple?

Did any of you have better luck getting a replacement with Apple rather than your service provider?

Any answers would be great help,
