iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call

After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?

I'm experiencing the same issue and just wanted to add my name to the list so Apple will maybe acknowledge the problem some day.

Apple will never acknowledge this problem. They are more interested in keeping up appearances that their products "just work" than they are in doing right by their customers.

Hello all,

I had the exact same situation as many of the users in this forum were facing. I had a 15-month-old iPhone 3GS with AppleCare. Since my upgrade to IOS 4, I have faced dreadful problems with it: it was constantly rebooting itself! At first, it was only during calls, after 6 minutes or so, it was rebooting itself. After upgrading to 4.2.1, it became far worse, then, just randomly it was rebooting itself. This could have happened during using Safari, sending messages or playing a game. I had done several restores, resets, hard resets but nothing seemed to fix the problems.

In Cologne, Germany, there is not an Apple Store so I have tried the resellers & technical services but the only thing they have suggested was 'Wait for the next update'! Luckily, there was an Apple Store nearby, in Oberhausen (In Germany, there are just 4 Apple Stores). I made an appointment last week and went to Oberhausen which is 1-hour train ride. The genius was at first a bit reluctant to accept the situation, he claimed that I have too many apps running and I am not 'force quitting' them regularly so they continue to work in the background and causing memory shortages and the reboots I am talking! After talking some more, he did the diagnostic run on the phone. I don't know what he saw during (everything was in German and I don't speak the language) but then he proposed that I should force quit applications and show him how the reboot is happening. During quitting applications, the iPhone crashed and made the point. So, after 12 minutes, he decided to swipe my phone with a new one 🙂 It's been a week now and nothing has crashed yet and yesterday I have made a 32-minute long phone call. Everything is fine.

So, if you are under warranty, before trying anything, I would suggest you just go and try an Apple Store for a swipe.

Happy New Year @ all,

since last year when I update to iOS4 I had the same problems as most (all) of you have written. Calls broken with no reason, rebooting, no call in the log, a.s.o.
In Dec. 2010 after many calls with T-Mobile Austria hotline the decision was made to get the phone repaired. It was sent to the T-Mobile service center and returned 2 weeks later. The "T-Mobile certified iPhone techs" returned it with a note that the fault I discribed was "not replicable" and so the phone is working perfect! They updated to 4.2.1 and set all settings to default. Further the note told not to use my old backup (so why should one make it before???) and create a new profile in iTunes. I did as told - established first call - first call broken after 2.5 min - I was so happy.......

More senseless calls with the hotline, bla bla bla.

Before the turn of the year I decided to contact Apple via hotline. There a nice guy told me to chance SIM. My Sim was about 3/4 of a year old. The guy told me that the problem with iOS 4 esp. on 3GS depends on SIM's older then first release of iOS 4!

So I went to T-Mobile Store got me a new SIM (€ 10,-) - and since more then a week the phone works fine!!!!! No more broken calls, neither active nor passiv, even after 45 min. duration (I hardcore tested the phone!!!)!

Maybe this could be a method of resolution for some of you!?! Try it out! € 10,- for a new SIM is less then € 600,- for a new phone! And btw we all spend € 10,- for other useless thing then a brand new SIM.

Hope this can help fix the probs for some of you!

I have a 3Gs here, recently restored with 4.2.1 and the problem is still there. As a matter of fact, it has gone worse...

Just read a Dutch Poll which captured close to 1000 people that have this OFTEN and over 1500 that have the issue of rebooting REGULARLY.....

Apple - this has taken too long to solve...

So, luckily my iPhone was still under warranty, they replaced it with a refurb model. Sold it on eBay for $500 and put that money towards a Galaxy Tab. Best move I ever made. Am now enjoying the Flash-rich internets and an open app market 🙂

I just wish my other iPhone had the same problem so I could get rid of it too and get another Galaxy for my wife!

You totally lost me crapple.

Hi everyone,

Just came on here to see if others were having the same re-boot problem as me.
Looks like there are lots of you that are!

My issue sounds identical. Phone re-boots between 4 and 5 minutes into a call.
Sick of everyone I phone telling me how cr ap my phone is!!!

It only started happening after I upgraded to iOS 4, Ive got the latest update.

Not happy. Phone is out of warranty now. Gonna try phoning my network provider, O2, tomorrow. Hopefully the phone will re-boot after 4-5 mins so they know the problem is genuine 🙂
If that fails, I will phone apple.

If all of that fails, I take it the only way I can solve it is by unsoldering and removing the battery?
Why can't apple just use easily removable batteries?
I was considering buying a macbook pro... Don't think I'll bother with that now lol

Hi all

I wrote in this post in august 2010, and have tried all the "solutions" in the post. I gave up early december, and send it to my dealer under warranty. The second time they've got it, the sent it to Apple, with a request to be replaced with a new one.
I have had the new Iphone for 14 days, without any problems what so ever.

The old Iphone:
version 4.2 8C148a
model 133t

The new Iphone:
version 4.2 8C148a
model MC133B

Good luck

Best regards
Frederik

This topic has been ongoing since June 2010. Now 10 Jan 2011 and people are still posting about this unresolved problem. I have tried grasping some of the straws offered by fellow loyal apple users, but lets face it - this remains a major problem which is unresolved. I am very angry, and getting angrier every time my phone cuts out.
If I was a telephone service provider I would be even angrier - think of the lost revenue from calls cut short by this apple problem.
