iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call

After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?

You can add me to the list of dropped calls, always happens when I have the phone on my ear and generally mid way thru an important conversation.
All started when I upgraded to 4.0 and I thought it was just me.

Come on Apple, this is a major problem, and someone has missed a trick here.

I'm running 4.2.1 and it still drops calls and reboots

Is it just me or is this issue escalating to epic proportions?

Both myself and my mate have 3GS's. My iPhone has been replaced and mates phone is seriously on the blink. Mainly crashing on calls. He is visiting the Appalling Store (joke – it really is a horrible place) next week.

I also have two friends who have 3G's and iOS 3.13. No crashes, no problems and iPhones still working for over 2 years. Mmmm.

I personally have 5 Macs and have always been a fan of Apple hardware and software. Where did they go wrong this time? First the 4 and now the 3GS. It's taken a while for this issue to escalate, however just one look at this forum and a surface scratch on Google suggests it's not just a few iPhone users.

i have same similar problem
that my iphone 3gs (with iOS4.2.1) is "turn off /shut down" during a call or even not in use.

i have remove all and reset all and remove all applications on my iphone, but still turn off during a call but not much as before i restart.

i come to Service Center on my town but i very dissapointed because they just do Restart and can't do more for my iphone (T_T)

thank you and pardone me for Rude words and forgive me.

I'd like to add my experience so it may help others to solve this issue. I have both a 3GS and a new 4. I only noticed this problem when making long calls. Since my calls are usually fairly short I never noticed it before so I can't relate the issue to any OS version. But I can tell that the problem probably isn't temperature related.

I have Tomtom navigation software installed on the 3GS and that piece of software is really heating up the iPhone. Since I drive a convertible and the iPhone is attached to the Tomtom holder on the windscreen, the sun is also doing its fair share of heating on the black casing of the iPhone. Now the iPhone is getting so hot it is nearing its melting point. I mean really hot. But I only had the iPhone shutdown once and the display showed a message that is was shutting down. This is quite different to the sudden crash when using the iPhone for a phone call.

The difference between the baking hot iPhone in the car and simply doing a call from inside the house with an iPhone at room temperature is quite large. So therefore I concluded that the temperature has nothing to do with the crashes during a phone call.

Since the battery was on its way out I needed to replace the battery. I bought an official Apple battery (maybe stupid but I didn't wan't to have battery issues like some people reported) and replaced the old one. A simple job with the right tools, although not a job for the technically challenged. Anyway the phone has been disconnected from its energy source and that should fix the issue as some people reported.

I restored the iPhone software and guess what, no difference at all. The iPhone still crashes randomly when making a phone call. I can still start the Tomtom navigation software and heat up the iPhone without a failure whatsoever. But making a simple call crashes the **** thing.

The iPhone 4 however has not crashed during call but as I said earlier my phone calls are usually very short and I haven't made a long call yet. As soon as it crashes I will let you people know.

Just to add my experience, I too have been suffering the dreaded reboots since installing iOS4. My phone was well out of warranty so I just put up with it and planned on binning the thing come June when my contract was up. However, around a week ago, my wife was admitted to hospital as a serious case. I now spent all my time there and relied on the phone for contacting family and work. Not a good situation with a phone that can reboot at any second when I am trying to make very important calls. So yesterday I visited a Genius Bar, just have a go at someone who had anything to do with apple. Before I could get going, they replaced my phone for a new 3GS even though they pointed out it was well out of warranty! So credit to Apple in this case and I may just buy a new iPhone in the future now. Up to that point, I was never going to have anything to do with the company again. It may just be worth some of you trying for a replacement even when out of warranty.

I'm in the UK. For the last few months, my iPhone 3GS has been re-booting during calls. Was so fed up with it, was thinking about getting some sort of cheapo pay as you you go phone to actually make calls that didn't crash. It was (3GS) 6 months out of warranty.

Anyway, attended appointment (yesterday) with nearest genius bar, not really hoping for much. Was totally amazed to be given replacement new (well, maybe refurb, but hey, who cares).

Have made several long calls today without any problems.

Anyway, would just like to say thank you Apple for this, could not afford to buy myself out of 6 months contract to upgrade to a 4.

My iPhone was purchased in June 2008 so well out of warranty, here is my experience of the Apple store in Regent Street in case it helps others to get a replacement phone.

The guy asked me if I had backed up the phone and simply restored the iOS4 and said that's all he could do. I argued that because "their" software had caused the problem I wasn't happy with just the restore and demanded a replacement phone. He went on about it being out of warranty so I demanded to see the manager. Apparently the manager suffered the same problem and said a replacement phone would be the best way to resolve the problem. He let slip that he "thought" it was a problem with the calling chip in the early models! Funny how the genius bar assistant hadn't heard of the problem before..when I produced a few print outs from this thread he really didn't know what to say.

Don't let them fob you off and stand your ground, mention trading standards as I called them to see what rights I had, according to TS they have to do one of the following for a period of up to 6 years

A) Repair the phone
B) Offer a replacement (refurbed)
C) Offer a refund but at a perentage of the original price due to age etc

Hope this helps

Andy

Somehow Apple doesn't seem to understand that this requires an urgent solution. How useful is a phone when you can use your iPhone for anything except making phonecalls?
Until the latest update of 3.5.x my iPhone 3Gs worked like a charm. OS4 f *ed everything up! I'm really mad at Apple!

STOP ADDING FEATURES! FIX THE BASIC PROBLEMS FIRST! DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!
