iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call

After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?

There are major reception, battery, reboot and other problems with iPhone 3GS after upgrading to iOS 4.2.1.
I can not believe that Apple did not test this for major bugs like this one is.
I am a business user and can not effort to have bad reception. Apple wants to gain in the business clients... I never had this with my former BlackBerrys!
I need a reliable phone not a play thing like this is right now, it just needs it to work propely. And if a major bug like this comes along, fix it immediately. After the iPhone4 story, now this...incredible! Going back to my reliable BlackBerry! It just ain't reliable and takes forever to fix a problem.
Look at this large forum discussion... Any reaction or action of Apple seen....
Sorry not its just not business worthy.

Add me to the list of iphone 3Gs users with a phone that cannot make phone calls without cutting out after about 5 minutes. I have rebooted the phone after it completely locked me out and wanted re-installing, upgraded to latest version of iOS4.2.whatever (there seems to be a new version each week) and still both mine and my wifes 3Gs' are crashing during calls. I thought I had solved it by turning off the auto lock feature, which seemed to work as I made a long call for the first time in about 8 months on it, only to make another call after it which crashed after 3 minutes.
Apple this really is rediculous! As a company they should be ashamed with such poor customer care. Otherwise I can't fault the thing, it is a genius bit of kit. Maybe they should rename the thing to the 'ican'tphone'.

been to the genius bar today, took two iphones with the same problem, asked the guy to look at one and he took it away to check the serial etc came back and said its out of warranty so i argued that the fone was now unfit for its purpose so the update was to blame, he went away and came back again and said the fone had been jailbroken and that voids everything. i must amdit i didnt have an argument for that and as it was a pile of kak anyway i decided to pay the £149 to swap it for a refurb (which is like new) and at least i have a good fully working iphone again.
the second fone which had the same rebooting problem we tested and it seemed after the 4.2.1 update it works perfectly again, usually i noticed it getting hot during calls before the update and then it rebooted showing the battery dead on screen, but after the update to 4.2.1 it is no longer getting hot so i told them id take that away and test it and made a call for an hour tonight with no problems and no extra heat.
so i recommend the update, and as 2 of the genius bar staff explained this update was partl designed to beat this issue.
altho the seocnd phone has never been jailbroken i decided to trust the update this time and so far so good, it seems to be solved.

good luck everyone!

Seems to me like Apple are subscribing to the fingers-in-ears-la-la-la-we-can't-hear-you school of customer service, which is APPALLING! I of course have the same issue as everyone else on here, 18 month old 32GB 3GS that lasts between 5 and 15 mins on calls before resetting. It is iOS 4.1. I've not really tried any fixes but am currently undergoing a little test to see how long it will stay on a call with my house phone before booting (currently at 12 mins). I've turned off 3G and it is on speaker with no case, so overheating shouldn't be an issue. I have seen someone say that turning off notifications helps - where do you do this? I'm well out of my warranty by now so I need to fix this myself. Luckily I'm an anti-social git and prefer texting to voice calls, but it would still be useful if I could rely on it to maintain a connection for a decent length of time...
Well it reached 20 mins and then I stoppped it manually , which is the longest call i've had for a long time, so it could b related to either heat or 3G. I had also stopped all my background apps. Just a few ideas as to how to stop it dropping off.

I finally got around to going to my nearest Genius Bar last week. They swapped my 3GS 16GB for a new (well, presumably refurb) phone with no fuss (still under warranty). I'm pleased to say that it now doesn't cut out during calls. Had a 35 minute call yesterday no problem.

One interesting thing was that they ask you a load of questions during your consultation and then give you a print out at the end. On the print out there was a question "Issue Verified?" to which the Genius had answered "Yes". I asked how she had verified it, as I hadn't been asked to demonstrate the problem. She said something like "oh, I've heard of the problem before and it's easier to just swap the phone". Think it goes to show that Apple are aware of the problem, but just won't officially acknowledge it (as we know!!).

They sent me a questionnaire by email today about my repair experience, so I told them on there exactly what I thought about the whole mess 🙂

I think we are all in general agreement that this problem started after iOS4 was installed in certain 3GS iPhones, mostly those sold outside of the USA. It also seems that some of you, who have been able to visit a Genius Bar, have been able to get free replacements. For others, visiting a Genius Bar is inconvenient or cost prohibitive.

While looking for a solution to a MacBook issue, I found this website:

http://www.apple.com/legal/terms/iphonears/outofwarranty.html

Perhaps there is something there that will help you?

It seems that Apple might have a written policy that addresses this situation, depending in which country you are. On the right side of the page there are additional policies that might offer assistance in this situation.

Good Luck.

I have written earlier about a fix i thought helped, this helped but it didn't get rid of the problem.

I have now tried deepsiphone's fix with exchanging the mobilewatchdog file. PROBLEM SOLVED! It works, but you actually have to jailbreak your iphone to get it to stop rebooting during calls! Stupid Apple!!!!

I recommend everyone having problems trying this fix! I have at least used it for a week now and have had about 10-15 calls lasting 10-20 and the reboot problem is gone!! What a relief!!

Hello!

I have iPhone 3Gs 32MB, never jailbreaked.
I have the same problem, after cca 5 min phone call, the phone restarts unexpectedly.
Everything else (apps, games, mail, cam working fine).

Sorry for my english!

In Hungary there is a very talented small group who repairs Apple products (www.i-doki.com)
They are very famous, because they are really expert guys.
They said, this is a battery problem. They know this issue.
The new iOS 4.0 firmware use more power and if the reception is not good the phone crash due battery. In the case of 99%, newer produced original battery resolves this issue.
Here in the house the mobile signal is almost 0 (telenor) and the phone always crashing.

I will try this battery change tomorrow and I will report the result next week after testing.
Keep in touch.
