I have the same problem as discussed here.
I seen some posts reffering to battery problems and replacing it solved their problem.
Last night i had a charge of about 60% and when i used the phone later on it showed 18% i was suprised to see how much charge it had lost in a short space of time, about twenty minutres later i used phone again and it was back up to 53%.
maybe it is a false battery reading or battery that is causing the issue?
This is exactly the problem I'm having with an original US launch 3GS. My batt goes down to anywhere between 75% to 55% with normal use and I start having the problem. The phone turns off. Sometimes I can restart it but, then it will usually turn off almost immediately while still loading the OS. I can do this usually 3 or 4 times. Then I get the icon that indicates I don't have enough charge to turn it on (red flashing bit in the battery icon with the plug icon below that). At this point I can feel the warmth coming through the shell. If I let it cool for a about 15 minutes, I can turn it on and I'm back up to the same 65% or less range. If I use the phone in any way, repeat all of the above until I recharge it.
I think either the OS isn't reading the battery condition right or the battery itself is failing. I ordered a replacement battery kit from ifixit. If it works (and I don't ruin the thing) - great. If not, then it may be time for a different (brand?) phone.
