iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call

After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?

I'm probably tempting fate but I may also have made a breakthrough thanks to suggestions earlier in the thread.

I've turned off notifications, MMS messages and fixed the orientation to portrait..........and made a 15 minute call this evening with no reboot.

I'll keep you posted.

On another note I've written a complaint letter to the Apple head office and if I get a response I'll let you know. Don't hold your breath though!

I have same problem with my 3GS. If the carrier signal is lower (2-3) the iPhone reboots during the phone call. I experienced this problem with ipod app as well. The phone was never jailbreaked. I bought it on the 3GS launch day (19. 06. 2009.) I tried restore with new account, but it did not fixed the problem. Probably next week I will go the nearest Apple store (Munic, 600 km from here), and I will see what they say.....

Hello Attila!

As I wrote earlier, I have changed the battery with iDoki today (www.I-doki.com).
Let see what is the result.
I hope that this change will resolve the problem, because the phone was never powered off totally.
After the battery change I had to accept all the mail connection password again and the phone ringtone, SMS ringtone, date and time settings switched to default. This is proving that the battery always keep a minimal voltage for the phone.

I have the same problem as discussed here.

I seen some posts reffering to battery problems and replacing it solved their problem.

Last night i had a charge of about 60% and when i used the phone later on it showed 18% i was suprised to see how much charge it had lost in a short space of time, about twenty minutres later i used phone again and it was back up to 53%.

maybe it is a false battery reading or battery that is causing the issue?

This is exactly the problem I'm having with an original US launch 3GS. My batt goes down to anywhere between 75% to 55% with normal use and I start having the problem. The phone turns off. Sometimes I can restart it but, then it will usually turn off almost immediately while still loading the OS. I can do this usually 3 or 4 times. Then I get the icon that indicates I don't have enough charge to turn it on (red flashing bit in the battery icon with the plug icon below that). At this point I can feel the warmth coming through the shell. If I let it cool for a about 15 minutes, I can turn it on and I'm back up to the same 65% or less range. If I use the phone in any way, repeat all of the above until I recharge it.

I think either the OS isn't reading the battery condition right or the battery itself is failing. I ordered a replacement battery kit from ifixit. If it works (and I don't ruin the thing) - great. If not, then it may be time for a different (brand?) phone.

I installed the new battery this past Monday night and have gone through 2 full charge/discharge cycles and used the phone heavily. I have not had the problem since replacing the battery.

Dec 23. I last posted that I had my 3GS switched to a new one from my provider (Telenor, DK). I am happy to report that since then I have had no problems with reboots with our without 3G signal, with or without bluetooth connection or by holding phone at the ear. I am now inclined to believe that this error is due to some HW error in some 3GS phones.

I am again a happy user/owner of 3GS

Hello Attila,

I have a bad news pal.
Unfortunately my 3Gs rebooted again after cca 5 min phone call..
Where I'm living, the carrier signal is very weak. Most of case the signal is almost 0, and unable call anybody.
This environment brings this reboot case. If I'm In the city or anywhere else with good signal strength, there is no crash or reboot.

I'm going to sell my 3GS.

Hi people,

Hopefully this may be of help to some of you with the reboot problem..
I have had the same reboot with Apple-screen-of-death problem with my iPhone 3GS since I bought it in September 2010 and it boils my blood everytime it happens.

I bought a rubber case and screen protector at the same time as buying the phone to keep it in good nick and had the reboot problem from day 1. I tried all the updates (currently at v4.2.1) but still had the problem.

A few days ago I decided enough was enough so got it out of its rubber case and removed the screen protector ready for it's journey back to Appleland when I received a call which lasted over an hour without a reboot. It's been 4 days now and all calls are fine.

I'm going to try it back in the case and screen protector to see if it goes wrong again but fingers crossed this may have fixed my problem and may fix others too.

I sympathise with all of you out there because I really got stressed up when it cut out. What was more annoying is that it took nearly 2 minutes to come back on grrrrrrrrr.

Will keep you posted on my tests.
