iPhone OS 4 car integration

Dear all,
I'm facing a problem since yesterday's update of my iPhone 3G to iOS4.
I can't use it any longer with my car audio since I get the error message "no media found". This is on a new Renault Megane 3 with Arkamys Audio system. A similar problems occurs with Fiat's Blue & Me (also with an iPhone 3GS).
In some cases playback of music starts but crashes after a few seconds, alternatively it's showing the same effects as in the Renault. I found in the web a lot of people complaining about this problem with different audio systems. So, has anyone of you an idea about this problem, respectively an statement of Apple about this?
Regards
Christian

I came upon this forum after reading about the connection problems via USB on some car stereo systems after iOS 4 upgrades. As music lover this really *****. I have a JVC Stereo unit with front USB input which I had just purchased. Anyway, I downloaded iOS 4 but have not installed it on my iTouch (3rd Gen 32MB). I plan to install iOS 4 later today and bite the bullet and see what the H. Thanks for the info shared so far. I'll repost the results after the upgrade. 🙂

The method used to recognize the USB device has a clever bit of code in the firmware to improve the connect time once the initial handshake with the device has been established. So after the update to iOS4, the host device (Car Stereo) still thinks that it is connecting to the un-updated client device (iPhone prior to updating to iOS4) The updated client device (Your iPhone with iOS4), must fool the host device (Your car stereo), into believing that it is an entirely new device. This is done by connecting your iPhone to the stereo head USB port with the iPhone switched off completely. This is achieved by holding down the top power button on the iPhone until the red slide bar comes up and prompts you to shut the iPhone down. Do this and then with the car stereo switched on, plug the iPhone into the USB socket and wait till the iPhone starts of it's own accord. If it does not start, press the top power button on the phone until it starts. This will force the host device (Your car stereo) and the client device (Your iPhone) to re-negotiate the handshake between the devices and get you back to where you will once again be happy.

Now we can all stop beating up both the Car Stereo manufacturers and Apple and focus on being civil gentle folk that enjoy discussions about how clever we all are to be able to use amazing technology to get ourselves over-stressed and irritable.

I installed iOS 4 on my iTouch earlier today. Went out for a cruise to the Post Office, plugged the iTouch USB into my JVC Car Stereo and... at first there was silence as the display read "Reading" and then, voila... soon I was jamming the new Deftones album. I can't say I did anything as just install the software. So far so good here. I hope all you all figure the problems out as I was dreading connection problems of my own. A hard reset of all settings would usually fix any connection problems I had with iOS 3x. 🙂

Hi - I was having the same issue today after upgrading to iOS 4 on my 3GS. I have a JVC in the car that I listen to my iPhone on every day. I tried the suggestion of resetting the settings in General and it worked!

Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings

Sure it rearranged all of my icons and put my wallpaper back to default, and I had to rediscover my wifi at home - but this is minor compared to not being able to listen to music via my iPhone in the car. Hope it works for you too....

Thanks to all of you for your postings with comments and tips.
Unfortunately none of the tips (resetting or connecting the iPhone switched off to the stereo system) worked for me. I still get the error message "unable to read media. remove media." I also deactivated Bluetooth that the iPhone may not connect to the car stereo this way, but no luck.
As one of you mentioned, since really a lot of people have this problem after the update with different systems, this is an issue caused by Apple not by any of the car or car stereo manufacturers. I hope, that someone at Apple, who takes part in the forum, reads this post and maybe, leaves a comment on this, respectively tells us what to do?! Would be great! If we get no result this week, I try to reach Apple support to get some information on this issue...

Hi,
as I wrote in my last posting, I had a longer phone conversation with german Apple support today. I got the information that this issue is known, but they won't do anything! Reason: They develop the iPhone (OS) and publish only the features that the iPhone has, but not that it is compatible to third party product xy. Their position is, that the third party vendors have to make their products compatible with the iPhone if they want the iPhone to work properly with their products. And in addition, only products that have a label "developed for Apple iPhone" should work together with the iPhone at all. I told him, that a lot of people all over the world with different car sound systems have this problem actually, so this issue should have been seen during the development and all the tests before the rollout of iOS4. And that my opinion is, that they released the new version knowing that this issue exists - I got no answer on this!
In addition I've asked how to downgrade to OS 3.x - that's definitely not possible the "official" way.
Talked also to my Renault dealer about getting software updates in general, he told me, that Renault normally releases software updates, if there are known issues, but can't tell me when.
On the one hand I can understand the position of Apple, on the other hand it's a very arrogant position, to release software that causes problems to a specific group of users. I'm curious about the new iPhone 4, to see whether there is the same issue. So if anyone of you has the new iPhone, it would be great to read about the experience with car stereo systems.

i am soooooo furious that i cannot play my iphone through my JVC KD-R401 car stereo since upgrading to the new iphone software. it plays for a good 7 secs before making an awful sound before crashing. APPLE FIX THIS ISSUE PLEASE! i have now resorted to BURNING BLANK CDS before my long journeys to work etc. highly frustrating and annoying.
