iPod Touch freezing during restore

I have a 16GB iPod Touch 2nd generation and I am trying to install OS 4.0 and it's been an absolute nightmare. I downloaded the new software (which took quite a while since it kept giving me an error which made me restart the download like 4 times).

So now I'm in the process of actually INSTALLING that software. When I plug my iPod Touch into iTunes it says it sees the iPod is in recovery mode and asks me to restore my ipod (the only option it is allowing me to access is the "Restore" button, so all the "Update" errors are out of the question here).

When I "restore" my iPod however, the process get's about 1/4 of the way through before it freezes and the progress indicator on my iPod AND the progress indicator in iTunes stays at the same place and doesn't move. Even after letting it sit ALL night last night (about 8 hours) it STILL hadn't moved when I woke up this morning.

Any suggestions on how I could fix this?

For those still having this problems (on PC), here's a possible fix that work for me:

Redownload iPod firmware OS 4 here http://mac.softpedia.com/get/iPhone-Applications/Tools-Utilities/iPhone-Firmware .shtml

Open iTunes and plug in your iPod. Before clicking restore, hold down shift and then click the button. Browse your files to locate the downloaded OS 4 firmware and open it.

This should unfreeze and complete the restore/update.

I give up ... had to start from scratch.

However, I was able to get to OS4 ... with a loss of space. My 8GB iPodT has always shown available space of 7GB. After the (clean) upgrade to OS4, that's down to 6.84GB. Not too happy with this.

I did what another user suggested:

- Created a new account on my iMac
- Logged into new account
- Opened iTunes (9.2) and connected my iPodT
- At the summary page, opted for a Restore but declined the Backup
- Ran the updater: OS4 was all set up in a few minutes
- Went back to my regular iMac account
- Tried to restore from an earlier backup
- That didn't work
- Ran the Restore function again - wiped out my iPodT to default settings (now with OS4)
- I'm now running iTunes from my regular account and restoring from my last backup
- This ought to take me back to my previous settings of music, photos, calendar, contacts etc etc
- I hope! 😉

Not a very easy process so I have to say, despite being a very long-time Apple user, that this was not a good experience.

Hopefully Apple is monitoring these discussions and will do something about this so that others don't have to suffer this pain.

Apple -- are you listening?

Thanks.

Did your restore cycle the iPodT repeatedly? With iTunes freezing up?

That's what happened to mine all day. I finally called Tech Support and the guy was very helpful. He had me reset the iPodT (hold both buttons down and then connect to the computer).

At this point I got the option in iTunes to restore which I did. For about half an hour the iPodT said "Restore in Progress".

Now it's back to cycling on and off ... the Apple logo appears on the iPodT ... then a progress bar appears below it which shows a little movement ... then the iPodT cycles off (black screen) and the process begins all over again (apple logo - progress bar - restart).

It just never lets me in to the iPodT ... just cycles on and off continuously.

Was this your experience?

This upgrade (to OS4) has been a most frustrating experience.

No, I didn't experience that at all - sounds to me like there could be something more seriously wrong. I'd seriously recommend phoning Apple Support though - especially if you've never had to phone them before - just explain it was working perfectly before the upgrade and they should take responsibility. There's definitely been something wrong with the software release IMHO - there are so many people with problems.

Feel for you totally and hope you get the solution you need.

Latest update:

iTunes froze (again) last night. I force quit iTunes and left the iPodT on all night. It just cycled on and off until the battery ran out.

Called Tech Support this morning and we basically set up a fresh iPodT! We restored the OS (iOS4) on the iPodT and then I set it up as a new iPod.

I'm now recreating all my apps, and other stuff and here's what I'm finding so far:

1. WiFi is not behaving as well as it did in OS3. I'm 2 feet away from my router and the iPodT is showing only 2 bars of strength. It used to show all 3 bars.

2. Battery seems to be running down quicker. Of course I haven't had a day or two to test it out so far, but I did notice that it seemed to be running down sooner than it did earlier.

3. Recreating everything is a pain ... I've lost all my settings (newspapers that I subscribe to etc etc).

In short, don't go to iOS4 until it's had more time out there. I've lost nearly 3 days in trying to fix the problem created by updating my iPodT OS.

Apple Support were very helpful and patient and worked with me to fix this - so full marks to them for doing what Tech Support is supposed to do.

NOT full marks to the engineers who designed this OS upgrade. It did not work well and was a most frustrating experience - unlike my previous 20 years of working with Apple products.

Over and out. 😉
