Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

I do not think that Apple will respond or the press will really pick up on this issue, because it is a ratings game.

Think about this. The "Death Grip" issue was clearly a hardware issue. Therefore, it would have an affect on every Iphone no matter what (and it seems to do so). Now look at the proximity issue. This does not seem to affect every phone. Although, it appears to affect many phones. Either way it could be a software issue and not hardware. Apple may fix it and it is done. The "death grip" issue would have resulted in a recall of every phone sold. The proximity sensor issue most like will not cause that.

The only way for the proximity sensor issue to become a bigger issue with Apple and the press is if everyone that has it emails someone in the press and Apple asking for support. Maybe it will then gain some attention.

Received iPhone 4 on July 9th from apple, seemed fine until Sunday night when I had two dropped calls and 4 different people saying I can't here you, numbers dialing, people on hold, etc..etc.. I was defending this phone because I thought it was just a bunch of people complaining but this issue is so bad I will have to return the phone. I am considering a 3GS but I am so disgruntled I may just forget the iPhone....Oh and I love the fact that none my 3G or Ipod accessories work. We apple customers put up with so much crap because at the end of the day the products usually work better, this is clearly not the case with the iPhone 4. At this point I don't understand why they just don't admit the problem and tell us how they are going to fix it. This phone will be sent back if not fixed within a few days! It is currently unusable as a phone. And don't tell me to put a case on it, it already has one.

I've experienced the problem of "face dialing" too. I was told that the phone's keypad was supposed to deactivate while making a call. However, I've accidently hung up on people and calls have been put on speaker phone when I did not intend them too. I waited in line for 12 hours for this phone. I thought that I would be getting a quality product. I hope that they figure out a solution to this problem pronto!!!!! Otherwise, I am going to be one severely disattisfied customer!

I just wanted to add my experience onto this ever-growing thread. I have had the proximity sensor issues since I received the phone on July 2nd. I believe it is a software issue so I haven't bothered trying to replace the phone only to enjoy the same issues still. My first phone call dropped and at first I thought it was the antenna problem -- which I can reproduce, but not enough to drop calls so far. Instead it was because I hung up the call with my chin. Just yesterday I put my mom on Mute twice, ended the call once, and put her on Speaker once. All on the same "call", all unintentionally. I have had an iPhone since the first 2007 generation without these problems, so I refuse to accept this "you're doin' it wrong" resolution. Apple needs to fess up, and tell us when to expect that software update that puts the sensor behavior back like it was in the previous models.

I too am having 2 issues... (I do not have a case)

1) It drops calls way more frequently than my 3G ever did...
2) 2 out of 4 calls have me 'Face dialing' or starting up FACETIME. SO incredibly frustrating. I reset the phone, still no joy.

Apple...please fix these issues ASAP. I dont see how these issues were not found and fixed before initial release. They are easy to reproduce and extremely annoying. Starting to thinking 'DROID'.

Proximity issue here on both mine and my wife's phones. From what I've seen, every iOS4 device has this issue (including upgraded 3G/GS phones), but some people either refuse to acknowledge they are having it or simply don't make many calls.

To Apple: all you have to say here is you are working hard on a fix (this is 100% a software issue) and will post an updated version of iOS4 ASAP. Why is that so hard?
