Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I went to the AT&T store today to return my phones (which CS at Apple told me I had to even though I bought them from Apple) and NOT, I have to return at an Apple store. But I did have an interesting conversation with the AT&T Assistant Manager. He was not aware of the problem and hadn't heard of any returns for this issue at that store. But he did say they had very few pre-orders and a second launch on June 29th which is when they sold most of their phones. Sounds like a different batch of phones...

Dear People . Please stop this missleading idea that any 4.0.1 will or can cahnge anything It is already proved by several peole with signal strnngth testing that the problem with antenna can only be fixed by phisical changes and nothing can be done by any new software release. I am sure after 4.0.1 we have a lot of people caliming it helped but it will not because can not help.
The Proximity sensor problem is by far more desing problem and again can be only fixed by making new phone design.
Look at the video on Internet showing the testing by reputable engeneers to see all of the above .

Notice how on his new iPhone 4 you can see the prox sensor. You can't see that on mine....

Let us dream Michael... if it doesn't fix it then we will look for other solutions. My sensor isn't broken, it senses my ear the first time, it just needs some adjustments to make it stay off.

I can see that on my IPHONE 4 just go in sunlight you will see it at an angle and even after i have that sensor on my IPHONE4 as they showing on gizmodo My Iphone4 is still having the same proximity problem and yes this is my 2nd IPHONE 4 😟

This is a nice dream that anything can be fixed by software but when the signal is lost and it is phsically mesured by already several peole , it is just a dream with no future.
You do have a problem with your sensor. Make couple of calls with holding the phone by your shoulder and you will see. Again just ajusting the sensitivity is not a solution as already discussed . And in this case again no 4.0.1 or any 4.x can not help unless new design created and it takes time .
The real situation we will know by the end of July when Apple suppose to sell iphone4 in many other counties . It will be a point to check if it is fixed.
I ( only my feeling ) suspect they will delay the sale in other countries waiting to make the new design.

You bet you bottom I have a problem with my sensor! You don't need to explain to me how to instigate the problem, trust me I do it plenty enough all by myself thank you very much. If they can tell the sensor to shut off and stay off via software then all my problems are solved.

Fortunately I'm one of the people who doesn't seem to be experiencing any issues with the antenna. Yes it does drop bars if I "hold it wrong", but it's never dropped a call. But I live in a magical AT&T bubble that others can only dream of, so I don't judge others who are suffering. I pity you brothers in Apple.

Add me to the list... I'm on my 2nd phone, and it has been horrible. Every call I either initiate Face Time, mute the caller, call another one of my contacts, or initiate some other action via my cheek. The Genius told me that "my phone passed the proximity sensor diagnostics" and was OK... but then asked if I would like a replacement. I agreed, hoping that it would be better. It was not. The kicker was when the Genius suggested that he was having the same trouble until he "held the phone at a 45 to 90 degree angle away from his face". He told me that it would solve all my problems! Like most previous posters, I had no issues with my previous 3G or with my wife's 3GS. Come on Apple, find a fix and make this right!!!

Antenna issue is not a problem untill you touch the area as we know and you are correct as long as you are in a strong signal area it is not a problem even when you touch the special low left corner. But imagine tomorrow you have your phone with you and you somewhere and signal is not strong ? Then you will face ocasional calls dropps. Phone still defective.
With the snesor ajusting the sensitivity will not fix the problem. if just sensitivity increased with no sensor and no sensor postioning changed it will be the oposit effect.
Try to make the phone call ( to 611 ) , turn your phone ( 3g or 3GS) around , home button up and try to aproach the phone with your hand and fingers and let's try to go to browsing or any other Task. You will see the oposite effect when sensor is too sensetive( in this test just a position of the phone is wrong ) and it does not allow you to do anything on the phone face panel.
Only hardwaare change can help.

I am soooo disappointed in this iPhone4.. This proximity sensor issue is for the birds. The phone barely works as a phone. I am hanging up on people 2-3 times PER CALL!!!! DAILY!!! My cheek hits the END button and hangs up the phone (the keys are active if I hold the phone between my ear and shoulder). While in the Apple store for another reason one salesperson said how do you like the new iphone. I said its the worst phone Ive had. I preferred my 3G to this. Never had this problem. I hope they fix it. I really DO NOT like the new iPhone4 at all as a result.

Have you tried to reset your settings on the phone (General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings)? That seemed to work for me today.

I am having the same problem, I had both the iphone and the iphone 3 and NEVER had a problem, I am so disappointed with this, I hang up or mute on almost every phone call.

This only works temporarily and then the issue comes back. It has been tried over and over for all users on this forum.

This is NOT a permanent fix.
