I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).
Has anyone performed a hardware reset? —Hold down the Home button and the sleep/wake button
until the Apple logo appears.
If anyone has restored their iPhone software, did you try making calls before restoring your previous iPhone backup? Maybe there's something corrupt in the previous backup?
I was having the same problems and I removed my Belkin Flip Leather case - and now, not a problem. Apparently, the case was causing the problem... If you have it in a case, remove it and try....
Resetting all settings ended up being the solution for me.
My issue was that the proximity was shutting off the display when I would put the phone up to my ear, but it wouldn't turn the display back on when I was done talking or listening to voicemail. Most of the time I had to force a reboot by holding the power and home button for 10 seconds to get the display back.
Been banging my head on this for a few days. A restore didn't help. Should have searched here first.
I'm also having the issue... brought it to ATT and they said to hold it up to my face tightly. What a joke... Apple needs to fix this ASAP, I virtually CANNOT talk on the phone without hanging up on someone or accidentally pressing buttons.
I am also having the same problem... did the reset thing did not work.. i have tried all the "tricks" listed on all of these posts..case or no case it did not matter.. MY SENSOR DOES NOT WORK AT ALL.. it will not blink, go off, or anything,. even when i hold my finger where the sensor is "supposed" to be. still nothing. I hope this is just a software issue. if not apple is going to have a mess on their hands.I have called tech support and they have set up an appointment for me at my local apple store. so hopefully they will axchange it and see if the new one is free of defects. if not we will just have to keep swapping it till we get a good one.NOT A GOOD WAY TO DO BUSINESS APPLE.. my old 3g never had a problem...please get this fixed apple..these devices are to expensive and our time and calls are to valuable to be keep worring with issues like these... thank you
Just came back from the Apple store and replaced my phone, while I was in the store and walking home the sensor SEEMED to be fixed. I plugged in the new phone to my computer and set it up as a brand new phone, which is a pain in the ***, but its not working again! What the ****!? I think there is some setting on the phone which is causing this problem. I don't know how this is happening but I hope this is fixed soon.
I too am having this issue... and it's extremely frustrating. I am on my phone all day and I can't have an issue like this - it's too serious to put up with. I am hoping we get a software update tomorrow that solves this problem or I'll be heading into the store for an exchange ASAP (although from what I am reading on here I don't have much faith in that at this time...).
I tried all the "tricks" but the problem continues. I hang up, begin facetime, or dial numbers with every person I talk to.
called apple they said the fix is to get a new iphone... however there are no phone available for a few weeks..... so I guess everyone having this issue is stuck... I am a good hour drive from my apple retail store and I purchased the phone at best buy. apple said to take the phone to a apple retail store when they have stock and it will be replaced... this is crazy I cant believe this problem...
Same issue here, I use google voice and during calls I am hitting buttons with my ear since the screen is active and activating my other phone, turning on call record, etc!
I'm not sure if this has been suggested as I didn't want to read all 10 pages but...
in another thread someone mentioned just doing a hard reset (holding the home button and the sleep/wake button) this also resolved the issue for me.
Well, for what it's worth, I pre-ordered two iPhone 4's and got them on the 23rd. My son and I were so happy to be among the first to get them. But... we've had many more dropped calls that we ever did with our 3GS's. And even more annoying... we seem to have the same problem many others are having: the proximity sensor is NOT working properly. Both of us have had MANY calls interfered with by accidentally pushing the Mute (or some other) button with our cheeks while on the call. We have both reset AND completely restored our new iPhones, but the problem is still there. I think this HAS to be either a calibration problem or a hardware problem with the proximity sensor. Hopefully, it is only a calibration problem that can be fixed with a software download. Hurry, Apple! This problem is casting a shadow over this wonderful new iPhone. Don't let it smudge your reputation.
I thought a settings reset fixed mine, but it didn't. Was placing people on hold and mute with my cheek today. Took the phone to the Apple store and they plugged it in and said proximity sensor is fine...
