Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Okay -I took my iPhone to the Apple Store this afternoon. I had previously done a hard reset that appeared to solve the problem, but I wanted to get the issue documented. The "genius" ran a diagnostic but couldn't replicate the problem. I told him I had done a reset, and he said that is what he would have done. He was aware of the issue from these boards, but mine was the first phone brought into his store for the problem. So, it appears that the official fix is a hard reset as far as Apple is concerned. (And if it doesn't take, do it again.)

I'm having the same problem-- the sensor clearly works to some extent because the phone screen will go off when i cover my thumb over the sensor during a call (it's just above the earpiece to the left). So clearly, my hardware works so I'm guessing it's a software issue. The Apple tech support told me they would be happy to switch out my phone, but I'm holding put until the new software patch comes out this week. It's a major problem for me though-- I am constantly putting callers on mute, hold, activating facetime or hanging up. I have even managed to open and email and begin to type with my cheek before noticing that i had hung up on the person I was talking to! Apple, please address this ASAP!

My first gen never did this. Decided to wait til they put on a front facing camera on the phone and bought it. Now I can't even use the phone because my face keeps hanging-up, muting, dialing another phone number, and placing on hold every call I make. I hate to say it but I may just go back to my first gen. It's still in mint condition and does everything it should. Please realize this actually is an issue and fix it cause they way I hold my phone also takes away the "phone" Functionality of my iPhone. It's just an "i" I need my phone back!!!

Having exactly the same issue here. When making a call it will randomly dial a number of the keypad or switch on the speaker phone etc. Between this and constantly needing to reposition my hand so I hold the phone "correctly" (since I kept forgetting and slipped my hand into it's natural position for holding the phone until the person at the other end tells me I'm breaking up of the call terminates due to lack of signal), i would appear that the iPhone 4 is currently, simply not fit for purpose.

Very disappointed,
A

I think this is the same as the Facetime bug.

Does anyone have this issue who HAS NOT restored from a 3G / 3GS backup?!?

I think restoring from a backup overwrites a lot of settings on the new iphone that it shouldn't; disabling Facetime and maybe misconfiguring the sensors (maybe even misconfiguring the antennae?

This thread continues to grow quickly and has become quite difficult to read thru if you're just now looking at it for the first time. In summary, some people have seen an improvement after doing a reset on the settings and/or reset on the network settings. I personally did not. I even went so far as to restore the iPhone as a new device (painful) without any luck. Cases on the device can be an issue but I'm not using one and I think most people aren't that are experiencing this issue. I did call Apple and they are willing to swap the iPhone out with another one, however, all the usual caveats on the exchange apply. Someone posted earlier in this thread they went ahead and did the exchange but still have the issue with the new device. Merid posted a video that demonstrates the issue very well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqdhdnXx7dk
The bottom line is there doesn't appear to be a universal fix for all of us that can be done at the user level. If you are reading this thread and experiencing this issue you should PICK UP THE PHONE AND CALL APPLE NOW to open a case number on this. Only after the problem has been widely reported to them, not to fellow users experiencing the same problem, will they try to implement a fix.

good idea; however I have yet to see anyone with this issue that has not restored from a 3G / 3GS backup.

Just like the facetime issue.
I personally think that there are bugs in this restore, and everyone who doesnt restore from a backup seems to be having no software issues at all...
So; call apple, and maybe let us know if you have this issue if you did not restore?
I have heard people fixing this by blatting to factory settings (this will restore the original iPhone 4 settings that are changed by the backup restore)
