Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

I put a 3GS beside a 4 last night on my desk and found the 3GS triggers at about 2 inches. It stays deactivated much longer than the 4 when you remove you hand as well. What seems really wonky is if you put it up to your ear and hold it perfectly still it will still randomly activate as demonstrated in the video I posted a link to a couple of posts up.

Its one thing after another with this phone. Having queued for an hour to get the last one in the shop, i initially thought it was great. But then, bit by bit, doubts crept in and sure enough, a web search shows that everyone is noticing the same things - naff reception if held in a certain way, and now dropped calls and switching to mute/hanging up etc. I was on call last night for Intensive Care and it kept hanging up on me - I wondered if it might have been made worse by the fact that I'm holding it like I've just dropped it in manure to avoid mucking up the signal, but evidently not! As I am deaf in my right ear, i have no choice but to use my left ear so this phone is a MAJOR problem as is - please Apple, if you can be bothered to read these posts, sort it out quick as this could kill all the good work done so far (not to mention my patients). The rest of the phone is top notch so just focus on sorting these major issues out first. Never mind iAd and iMovie - this is a phone first and foremost.

Well, then I'm not the only one that's having this problem! I've had iPhone 3g, 3Gs and now 4 and "had" always been a huge fan of Apple products (I also own ipods and MBP). This Phone is a huge disappointment, I should say. I waited in queue for hours on June 24th. The phone was very nice initially, but slowly I've begun to notice these flaws. I've muted upon my friends more than 5 times yesterday and terminated calls several times with my face. The phone also automatically went into accessibility mode when I was on a call. I guess Apple hasn't tested this phone enough, and rushed it into market threatened by Android!

I had this issue as I stated in the first couple of pages of this thread. I tried all the remedies people suggested (hard reset, reset all settings, and restore). Nothing worked.

I opened a case with Apple and they agreed to exchange the phone. They said only one store in my area appeared to have stock (Willowbrook Mall, pretty far from downtown, but whatever, at least they had some). The "genius" said she thought it was a software error but replaced the phone anyway.

Good news! It hasn't given me any problems whatsoever so far. I'm knocking on wood now... But the phone I had before couldn't get through a single call without pressing several buttons. I think this may actually be a hardware error. Get your phones replaced if they'll do it people.

I too have tried all of the DIY suggestions (resetting the phone multiple times, etc) with no success. I just called Apple support and I now have an appointment this afternoon at my local genius bar for a replacement. Hopefully they have them in stock when I get there.

And hopefully switching it out for a new one fixes it... to be honest, this is really a waste of my time and I'm starting to regret jumping to get this phone asap.

I'm also having this problem, i was on the phone to O2 customer service and all of a sudden the rep couldn't hear me, i was like ''hello, hello''...i was thinking it was a signal issue, so i was walking around the house trying to get a signal (or so i thought). The next time this happened i moved the phone away from my face and noticed that i had somehow muted myself. I have done the reset as well as a full restore/setup as a new phone....and thought it was fixed, but once again today i muted myself (whilst talking to an apple rep, who was aware of the problem). Also it seems like there's a delay from when i move the phone away from my ear to the screen re-activating. I just hope Apple can fix this with a software update!

UK iphone 4 user here. This has been happening repeatedly all day (first full work day with the phone). Random key presses, quite regularly hanging up on calls. Seems for me anyway to happen worst of all when the phone is held between shoulder and chin. Have had it happen when holding normally, never seems to be a signal issue (not had that old chesnut at all).

Hopefully a software fix, if nothing comes I'll see if a replacement unit is forthcoming.

I'm also having this problem.

The iPhone 4 is factory-fresh and was never restored from a backup. In almost every call I've made, I either mute myself, dial a second number, or hang up prematurely.

I'm not actually seeing the screen turn on, but the on-screen buttons are definitely being triggered by my cheek.

I've been through the same loop of restores and have seen no change in the problem.
