Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

Currently standing in the apple store. Don't even be 5 minutes late. Cause you will get bumped. I sure hope they can swap my phone out for a model with a working proximity sensor. But the people in the store are trying to be helpful so far. One guy said it's probably a hardware issue since the phone is in such mass production... Crossing my fingers. Wish me luck

I just got back from a trip to my local Apple Store. The genius tech was able to replicate my proximity issue and agreed that it was a problem. He said it was "probably a software issue" that would be fixed but was helpful and understood that I didn't want to "wait" for that. He put me in for a swap... but I have to wait until my local store gets more iPhone 4's in. As soon as they do, they are going to call me and I'm going to swap mine.

It will be interesting to see if that does the trick. Meanwhile, though, this is a really crappy problem to have to deal with.

My wife also got an iPhone 4 on launch day. She has has no problem with her's. Also, she has a 16gb and I have the 32gb. Has anyone with the 16gb's had this problem occur? So far, everyone I've talked to who has had proximity issues has had a 32. Don't know if there is a correlation there or not.

My friend has the 16GB model & I have the 32GB model & we both experiencing the same issue. Mostly when resting it between my shoulder & head, not when physically holding it.

Im having the same issue. Many times during calls my cheek hits different menu options. I never had this issue with my 3GS. It appears the proximity sensor does not accurately sense how close it is to your ear.

I too am having this problem. I love my iphone 4 - just a few issues to work out.

I am experiencing the same problem. I previously owned an iPhone 3G and never experienced this problem. Now when I am on a call and I place the handset to my head, the screen occasionally activates itself and my cheek will hit the speaker button or activate the keypad and repeatedly hit the "3" key. Annoying, but mangeable. I am assuming that the next iOS update will address this defect.

I am having the same issue. Couple of times the call dropped for no reason and it seemed more like it hung up then bad reception. I hope its just a software issue and is fixed ASAP.

I noticed my screen flickering on and off last night while on a call...I assumed that this was a normal occurrence but now I see from all these posts, it's not. I haven't yet had a call lost or muted due to it but it sounds like that it's relatively easy to do and I'm sure I will eventually. Hope it's a simple software fix and is available soon.

No problems here.

Just adding myself to the list of users having problems with the proximity sensor during a phone call when holding the phone to my face. My face ends up putting the call on mute or ending the call. The phone works properly in the beginning of a call but ends up malfunctioning sometime during the call. No predictable pattern to how or when it happens.

This IS a definite issue. I have never had this problem with my 3GS. I have muted, hung up or dialed other people while on the phone. Apple, what gives? I know you are the face, not the contents, but, someone should have QD'd this stuff a bit better.

Just wanted to chime in as well, same problem, it's driving me insane!
