Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Agreed. I also wish apple support would quit acting like it's the first time they've heard of the problem when people call to report it!

So here we are... 6 days since this phone has been launched, and the CALLING feature doesn't even remotely work properly, and still nothing from Apple. I've always loved my iPhones, but I'm starting to get fed up. If it was a minor issue that would be one thing, but this is a serious problem. Remember, it's a phone first and foremost, yet it doesn't work!

I've tried this and more, Apple #FAIL

Reset:
Network Settings
All Settings
All Setting and Content (setup as new phone, didn't use backup)

then

repeated it again...

Reset:

All Settings
All Setting and Content (setup as new phone, didn't use backup)

then

4.0 restore attempt 1: 3014 error

DFU restore attempt 1: 1601 error (different USB port and cable)

turned it on, white screen

DFU restore attempt 2: scrolling progress bars on Mac & iPhone

Finally, it restored!

I'm having the same issues! And my iPhone keeps saying "No SIM Card." I've taken the SIM card out and reset the network settings I don't know how many times. I've restored my phone, reset the settings, and am still having the issues with the proximity sensor and the SIM card. I love my phone, I just wish it worked like my 3G. I keep accidentally hanging up on people, FaceTiming them, or putting them on mute. Anyone know of any other fixes?

I have the same problem here - it has ended dropping every call but one so far - either muteing or trying to engage a face-time call.
I am also a left handed user so apparently I am holding the phone all wrong !
I have'nt heard that since I was rapped on the knuckles by my teacher for writing left handed at my dickensian nightmare of a school .
Well done mr Jobbs - way to alienate 10 % of your customers at a stroke !

Just FYI to all, support DOES know of this issue. The level one support people most of you get through to don't really have a clue about anything. In fact, the last one I spoke to said if you order a phone online, the only exchange you can do is through the mail. That's absolutely false, you can still exchange it in an Apple store.

That said, I've spoken to two different level 1 support people. Both very helpful, but not overly knowledgeable. The second one did push me through to talk to their 'senior advisor' which I believe is just level 2. That guy knew what he was talking about. We spoke for awhile about the issue and he explained he had heard it before but would still push it through for development to look into on a larger scale. He said at this point, all they can do is try swapping the phone to see if it fixes things but he believes a software fix will be necessary. I figured I may as well try new hardware if it's free, so I went to the store and got it swapped. The 'Genius' at the store said she had seen a couple people reporting the same problem as well. So, Apple does know of the issue. I pushed every tech I spoke to for them to submit reports so it gets looked at. They all promised me they were going to, so hopefully they did.

So far I haven't had the problem again since getting the phone swapped, but this was fairly late last night and I have only made one fairly short call. The unfortunate part is the new phone has the yellow spots at the bottom. Sure hope those disappear or I'll be swapping again when the store gets more stock.

I have the same problem with an iPhone 4 - 16Gb, installed as a new phone and not by recovery. I unsuccessfully tried the 'Reset all parameters' tip.
Is this a ... phone ?
Is there any chance to have this issue fixed with a next iOS release ?
Or is it an hardware issue ?
It's ridiculous to encounter this issue on a new phone... my ols 3G works perfecly (without speed and pretty screen, said.).
Let's hope that the maybe-planned 4.0.1 will fix that QUICK...
David.

OMG! I can deal with the random reception issues, but this proximity sensor thing is really starting to tick me off! Seriously, did Apple test this phone or what? I purchased the new iPhone 4 and did NOT update my new phone from my old one. I also tried the "settings reset" and it's still on the fritz! NO, I do NOT have a screen protector on my phone either. I have a date with "genius" on Thursday, and I'm sure i'll get the normal arrogant treatment I usually get from those pimple face high schoolers telling me it's some kind of user error or "sir it's because you have water damage" (witch seems to be their initial response to everything). I have a bad feeling getting a replacement phone when the come in close to a month from now, that i'll have the same issue. I never thought I'd say this but, Apple can have their "ipod 4" back. My next trip after returning my phone to the kid genius will be to AT&T to get a normal sim card so I can use my old iPhone, one that actually worked as a phone.

Bad news for everyone thinking of switching back to their 3GS until this is fixed. This problem is ALSO on the 3GS and is driving me CRAZY! Like everyone else, I've never had an issue with this...until I upgraded to iOS4.

So the good news is that it isn't the iPhone 4 hardware, but in iOS4. Apple really needs to fix this quickly!

I have a question for everybody that reads this forum regardless of whether you have the problem or not. Please help us and answer this even IF YOU DO NOT have the proximity problem!!! Does ANYBODY have an "iPhone 4" that has a proximity sensor that activates further away than 3/4 to 1 3/4 of an inch away from the phone? The 3GS and previous models seemed to have an activate range of about 2 inches away. Please let us know.

The reason that I am asking is that if NOBODY has a phone that has a better range than the average of 1 inch then it won't matter how many times I go to exchange my phone because it won't be fixed until they update the software or firmware or in worst case do a recall.

I would like to try and find out if this problem is only on some iPhone 4s or if it is all of them and only some of us that use the phone on our ear are having the problem and others are not because of bluetooth headsets etc. and the problem would not affect those users.
