I never had problems with this on my 3G, but the iPhone 4 isn't working the same. I then figured the work-around would be to lock the screen when I make/receive a call. That's when I discovered the new "feature" that if you're using the handset, the on/off button no longer locks the screen -- instead it terminates the call!
So they not only broke the proximity sensor, but they took out the only decent work-around, too!
And to rub salt into the wound, the Apple support rep I spoke to confirmed that this new "Feature" that the on/off button ends calls isn't even in the manual anywhere. Genius! Sheesh.....
