Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

I've been having this issue every time I talk on the phone. I called Apple Support, they told me to 'restart' my phone by holding both buttons in. That didn't work. Then, she told me to check my brightness auto button in settings. That didn't matter. She transferred me to their 'senior specialist'... he told me to restore my phone - and not from a backup. Is this SERIOUSLY their solution? They won't do anything until it's restore. The pain in the *** process it is already to backup, restore etc... but I have to set it up basically as a new phone, sync photos, contacts etc. For real Apple!? Come open about the issue instead of wasting my time with me spending a half a day of waste work!

I have had my Iphone 4 since the 24th of June. I have had numerous problems with my cheek cutting calls off, putting people on hold, or muting the call. It is very annoying. I upgraded from an Iphone 3g and never had an issue with the proximity sensor. Love the phone but know I am forced to talk on speaker so I dont interupt calls with my face. Please help

I know that these steps may not work for all of you, but this is what I went through to finally resolve my severe proximity sensor problem:

1. I discarded the old case I was using that was interfering with proximity sensor operation.

2. Still having bad problems with this I tried the Reset All option. This did not fix the problem for me.

3. After discussing with Apple support, I (reluctantly) performed a Restore (as new device). This worked for me, but I didn't want to have to set up all my apps, mail accounts, music, etc. from scratch, so I followed this up with a Restore (from backup) and the proximity sensor continued to work.

4. Just for the heck of it I put the working phone into my old case again - and it began to fail.

I've been running for two days now without a single face dial (without the case). It's worth a try going through these steps, as Apple support will probably want you to do this anyway.

Ok well putting all the information together in this thread, I propose this:

There is a software bug that needs to be fixed but if it is a software bug then why isn't EVERYONE experiencing it? Some people seem to fix this issue by resetting their SETTINGS but others try this and don't have any luck. Well, it seems like there is a certain setting or combination of settings that are creating this problem. I think that the people who are experiencing this issue are the ones who have a certain setting or settings turned on/off that other people don't. This is just a hunch but the question is what setting(s) could it be?

The saga continues...

The reset worked for me -until this afternoon. Then the issue started up again. Since I couldn't get an appointment at my local Apple Store for several days, I called Apple. I was stunned to be connected within a minute -but still ended up on hold for 40 minutes while the tech person looked into things. Anyway, the upshot is that he decided it was a hardware problem and a replacement iPhone will be on its way tomorrow. Here's hoping the new phone won't have the same problem!

I was having the same problem as you all, cheek hitting buttons during call, screen turns black at some point during call then I cannot hang up because screen doesn't come back on when I move phone away from my face. When I picked up my iPhone 4 the day it was released, the clerk at ATT sold me a leather flip case. I stopped using that case today and my phone is now working 100%. The case was for 3g and therefore it was affecting the sensor (I guess). Tonight I bought a Belkin rubber case designed for the iphone 4 and still no problems, thank God.
Not sure if you that are having the problems also have a case on the phone. In my case, it was the culprit as near as I can tell

I'm also having this same issue. I had an appointment at the Apple store yesterday to report the problem & the tech placed her finger over the sensor and indicated she was not able to recreate. I recreated the problem for her & she ran tests on the phone, but the test came back showing no problem. She did go ahead & swap the phone, but I'm still experiencing the same problem with this phone as well!!
