Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

I'm having the same issue with the proximity sensor deactivating during calls and my face causing the calls to be terminated (End Call).

Well I just got my iphone today and noticed right away that I had a problem. At first I thought it was because I was using an old leather case and it was blocking the sensor. But then I used the phone without the case and it was the same thing. My calls stay black when I look at the screen and then stays open when its by my face. I guess an appointment at the G bar would have to suffice!

I've wondered the same thing about settings, or perhaps multitasking. I've heard of some people reporting this problem after upgrading their 3GS to IOS 4 (which supports multitasking), but I haven't yet heard of anyone who has had the problem transfer to a 3G (which doesn't support multitasking).

For iPhone 4 my recommendation is to eliminate old cases as a potential source of the problem, followed by doing a Restore (as new device), followed by a Restore (from backup), if applicable, to recover as much of the previous configuration as possible. It's time consuming, but it worked for me.

OMG I am going crazy with this Proximity Sensor issue. I even placed a shield on the screen to make it less sensitive and it doesn't help. Its driving me crazy. HELP HELP HELP

Common Apple fix this issue its just crazy how the screen keep coming on when you are talking on the phone HOW LONG IS IT GOING TO TAKE YOU TO FIX THIS PROBLEM GEEZ !!!!!

Proximity issues, Nearly EVERY CALL I inadvertently put the call on MUTE. Very frustrating.

I also get the "flickering screen" and "pressing buttons with my cheek" issue with my 16gb iPhone 4.

Getting this too now, as well as reception issues, fed up with iPhone 4, time to return it and be refunded my £600, not acceptable on a phone of this price

My iPhone 4 works ok at the moment. I had an old leather 3GS case that was causing my problem. I have done tests with just the rubber bumper and the sensor works fine. Perhaps some people are using it in old cases. Try it out of any case by dialling voicemail and placing your finger, but not touching the screen just over the ear speaker.

Apple called me today and offered a replacement, so I cannot complain.

I always use the bumper case, so don't get any

You are part of the problem of why apple will not recall the iPhone 4, too many people are happy to work around apple's mistakes, fools, i am returning mine this weekend.

I am just going to wait till the 28th day and If by then Apple doesn't come up with a fix for this that's it I am going to return this crappy phone to Apple and guys don't forget these all problems are part of so called Brilliant Engineering

Yep me too, suddenly in the middle of the call it goes to mute of the keyboard comes up and and dials random numbers - when will a patch be released?

otherwise generally happy, but I think I might have to buy a bumper for it - reluctantly!
