Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

I have to look at the facts. My iPhone 4 looked like it had a problem and I have worked out it's the old 3GS case I was using that was causing the problem. Since just using the Apple bumper case it works fine. I had emailed my local Apple store to complain a few days ago and they came back this morning to offer me a new phone. I think the Apple service has been good now and in the past when I had an issue with my 3GS. That was replaced as a gesture of good will. I did not get the same service with a Nokia.

I am still using the 3GS case that causes the same problem until one comes out for the 4.

I am not saying there is not a problem, but if my iPhone 4 works ok, why should I change it? If you want to take yours back, that's your prerogative. Don't take the problem out on me, take it up with Apple.

Yes I brought the bumper case from day one and it does not add much to the phone either. It should solve the reception issue if you have one. I have tried the phone without the bumper and cannot get the reception to drop out. Maybe it's the moisture content in peoples hands.

Overall I'm happy with the iPhone 4. I-Movie works brilliantly and have uploaded to YouTube straight from the phone. Only thing that I'm not happy about is the TomTom cradle is not really compatible.

Who told you to change it? Address your comments to them not to the thread about people actually experiencing this faulty hardware issue...
(If it was software; everyone would have the issue)

I can confirm that by restoring the phone from scratch and setting it up as a new phone the proximity sensor problem disappeared. I had a 3Gs before this one so there might be a problem if you're just recovering from a backup of the old phone. Also I read that by resetting the SIM card the reception problems also get minimized, haven't tried it yet, though.

Sorry if this is a re-post, I've been following this thread but may have missed couple of posts.

Just called AppleCare and I have a case number regarding the proximity sensor issue. The guy I spoke to said he's talked to one other person who has the same issue, but he thinks Apple is focusing on addressing the antenna issue now (like he knows what they're focusing on in Cupertino, but I digress. . .)

He recommended that I hang on to the phone until the 25th or so day of my 30 day window and then take it into an Apple Store. He was very confident that the issue with the proximity sensor is something that can be addressed with a software update.

I noticed while I was on the phone with him that the proximity sensor issue seems to be worse than I had initially thought. I held the phone up to my ear for the entire call (didn't cradle it between my face and my shoulder), and the screen went on and off several times and then stayed on for about 45 seconds straight -- all while I was holding the phone up to my ear.

Maybe apple should also hire engineers that know how to implement sensors:

Apple Hires Antenna Engineers. Really.
"Sometimes, news items are just about a good laugh. You may or may not like Apple, but the way it has been handling their antenna issue has been like a small tech soap-opera. Steve Jobs, the CEO, claiming "not to hold the phone that way", rumors or software issues, and the latest but most crunchy part, since the antenna issue has been widely discovered, on the 23 june, several "Antenna engineer" positions opened up at Apple. Seems someone got fired: Antenna engineer job position 1, Antenna engineer job position 2, Antenna engineer job position 3."
I just figure they did all their testing in California, where AT&T dropping calls is as common as $4 coffees.

That may explain why I thought the problem was fixed when I exchanged the phone for a new one... I was testing it without having restored, then when I got home I restored my backup and the problem occurred right away. Could be a coincidence or it really is the software.

I'm not sure what I can actually do though... if I reset the phone completely I would still have to do a restore to get my app data back and I've already done that.

Some off-the-wall suggestions for Apple:
1) Let us know if there is a solution coming for this
2) If it is hardware, then add some preferences to the call screen so that the phone auto-locks, or the keys require two fingers, or require a slide touch
3) Just need to know that something can be done and we need something soon

I am having this issue too.

When making calls, the screen stays activated, whereby I end up hanging up, placing caller on speaker, muting the conversation and even calling other people in my contacts.

I hate to say it, but the phone function is almost useless to me because I cannot risk hanging up on a client or accidentally calling a client while on a personal phone call.

Is there a fix coming soon? I do not know how much longer I can go without using my phone.

I've had every iphone and have never had ANY problems before. This is frustrating.
