Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

I wasn't talking about the reception issue. As far as the sensor problem, you are part of it. 15 posts? One minute your crying like the rest of us, next your saying you have no issue. I'm sorry you can't put a case on your new facny iPhone, becareful you don't drop it. I hear the monkey glass is going bananas too...but that's a discussion for another thread.

Look I'm sorry for the hostility I'm just really frustrated by the lack of even a acknowledgement by Apple on the issue. You get a different story whenever you speak to an Apple rep. Something doesn't smell right here and it stinks, smells like sour apples to me.

This is a universal problem, anyone claiming the problem went away or does not exist is simply not using the phone in a way that would bring this issue about. I have tried half a dozen units already and they ALL have this issue. The way some people use the phone will determine if the issue comes to light. The problem is the delay in the sensor actuating more than anything else I have read. When compared to the 3gs side-by-side the 3gs actuates nearly instantaneously while the iPhone 4 has a lengthy delay.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the iPhone 4.

Here's some advice for maximizing your use of the iPhone without the pesky sensor getting in the way...

When you talk on the phone, hold it away from your face, but keep the earpiece touching your ear so you can still hear. I've done this successfully several times. I also keep my middle finger extended a bit, which touches my face first and not the phone.

The second part is more like it.

Yes I believe some people are having major problems with it. I thought I had one too before I found out it was the old case that was causing my one. It's very worrying that Apple have not confirmed any problem.

When you think that 1.7 million were sold in the first 3 days and they are made as cheap as chips in the far east, some problems are going to occur. The reason I did not change to the new one Apple offered me, is that it looks to be ok the one I have. I don't want to temp fate and get a bad one.

I hope you sort your one out soon.

I am having this issue with my iPhone 4 too. Apple please fix it ASAP. This is not an issue with 1.7 million hands but an issue with your iPhone device itself.

The sensor does not have enough depth (or range). All you have to do is increase the range or depth of the sensor that way it detects a surface even 2-3 inches away from it. Currently it only works if a surface is about 1 inch away.

And NO I am not going to stitch the iPhone 4 to my ear just because you think I am holding the phone in a wrong fashion.

Thanks

Count me in, too, I think Okay, so I did a "reset settings" and made two, 5 minute-ish phone calls and both were alright. When I pulled it away, it took the display a reasonable time to kick back in. I'm using a Speck iPhone 4 case. The very first call I made yesterday, fresh from ATT had me hangup, so it couldn't have been a restore from backup issue. Still, I'll see how it goes over the next 24 hours. I'd rather not use my friends and family as guinea pigs, but I just forked over $300 and re-upped my two-year contract.

i called apple care about my ongoing problem with the proximity sensor; (hang ups, people on hold, face time).
the tech on the phone booked an appointment with an apple store "genius".
so i got up early and drove down to the apple store for my appointment.
i was there fifteen minutes, about seven of them actually discussing my problem, i was told "i was holding it wrong", "to adjust how i place it to my ear" and to basically deal with it.
i find it ridiculous.
instead of admitting there are real problems with this device, antenna, proximity sensor and 3g data issues, we need to contort our hands and relearn how to use a phone.
the genius attitude was a little condescending, like i was not sharp enough to use said device.
apple has thirty days to figure out what they are gonna do to make this right, or there will be a black 32 gb iphone 4 for sale on the apple refurb page.

I had a similar experience.

Visited an apple store on Sunday , he just restored the phone and told me it will go away because it was apparently reporting OS errors.

I tried to replicate it inside the store and could not so was happy it was fixed. That lasted for about 1 hour when I started experiencing it again.

I called apple support on phone yesterday and was also told that I am not holding the phone properly.

I am totally disappointed with apple with their attitude.

They should give us a replacement for this on the spot. We can somehow deal with the antenna issues but this thing is really annoying and happening for every. I cannot use the phone to make professional calls for work any more.

I am giving them until this weekend to fix else I am returning the phone and filing a merchant dispute with amex if they charge me a restocking fee.
