Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

I am having an issue with the proximity sensor.

However, I believe this maybe an issue for those of us who upgraded from a 3g or 3gs and choose restore the iPhone4 option. My reasoning is that when I bought my iPhone 4, my wife and my two relatives also got the iPhone 4. I was the only one who went from an iPhone to iPhone. My wife and the rest of my relatives are not having the issue with the sensor. Furthermore, when I use their phone, I don't have an issue.

Same problem here. I'm pressing all kinds of keys with my ear during calls. I didn't have this problem with my previous 3 iPhones.

Problems with the iPhone 4 so far:
1. reception issue when holding the phone the "wrong way", which isn't any different from my previous 3 iPhones.
2. yellow spots on corners of my screen. Haven't disappeared completely.
3. proximity sensor during calls.

This doesn't feel like a 4th generation apple product. Apple hasn't officially answer to these issues.

Apple, you're dropping the ball.

I also have to not I tried resetting my phone and resetting network settings. After that I restored my phone via iTunes to factory settings and set it up as a new phone (I'm also a previous iPhone user).
So far it doesn't seem to be as bad anymore. I'll keep y'all up to date if the issue continues.

PS: don't try to force the phone into doing it. Have a natural phone call and pay attention if it still occurs!!

Everyone's mileage may vary, but here is what my latest genius bar appointment gleaned.

The tech I got didn't know anything about it and had me recreate the issue which I did quite quickly. After she initially told me that I was 'holding it wrong'..I seriously cracked up...and that the sensor means I have to be more careful with it, I barely moved it away from my ear and it happened..she then agreed it was a problem. She asked me to try it on her phone and I did..recreated the problem.

She went to the 'back' and said that when she told others, they all told her that 'oh yeah, the proximity sensor problem'. She came out and reported that the collective brain trust in the 'back' said that it is a known issue at Apple (duh..there's been some press and these forums about it)...and that it is a confirmed HARDWARE problem. She has a new 'finished good' unit ordered for me. Of course they didn't have any in stock. So, I am a litle leary because none of the other odd things are happening with my phone that are happening with others..no yellow screen, no bad bluetooth, no hot phone, no crashing ipod, no other 'one off' things. So, all I have is the signal issue and proximity sensor...so I was hoping for a non hardware fix because I hope I don't get one and all the problems now creep up. So, that's the current story from St. Louis...they say hardware and a replacement is the fix. Good luck to all..it is a super annoying problem.

It is absolutely inexcusable that Apple has not informed its own employees (much less the consumer) about this problem. The phone has been in the marketplace for eight days now. I've had mine for a week. I'm giving Apple two more weeks to own up to this issue or I will be returning my iPhone 4 because I can't use it for the most basic thing it is -- a PHONE. I can't risk being out in public and putting my boss on speakerphone during a call (this happened no less than six times in my own home during a 45 minute call a few days ago.)

I haven't decided what I'm going to do if I have to return the phone. I have hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars invested in DRM'ed music, apps, and the like. My wife has my old iPhone 3G and wants to hang on to it so I can't get that back. Android is a compelling option, but I've read some mixed reviews about the HTC Aria (the latest Android phone on AT&T.) My other option is to cancel my AT&T contract (only 8 months left in the contract if I take the iPhone 4 back.) However, if I jump over to Verizon, I lose the ability to talk and use data simultaneously because of the CDMA network.

I think the best option of all of these is that Apple fix the iPhone 4. However, if they refuse to admit that there is a problem, I cannot keep a phone that I am unable to use as a phone. That's the bottom line. C'mon Apple. . .serve your customers!!

Right, I've come back from the Apple store and with it an exchanged iPhone.

Looks like the Apple staff are just as confused as us. The person I spoke was unable to confirm if it were a software or hardware issue.

He also couldn't confirm when an update would be available and gave me a time frame of 1-3 months.

I haven't had time to play around with this one, my only check was with him calling my phone for about 20 seconds and that was about it.

He didn't even perform any checks on my phone...perhaps he was instructed by his Mac to give me one making me believe that it is an hardware issue.

We'll see once Apple decide to open their mouths and tell us something...

This is a Joke! the main feature of the device is that it is a phone. I have experienced Muting, call hang ups, activating face time etc etc on almost every call.
We know its not just some iphone4 users its all the iphone4's and some juts havent experienced it yet (maybe they have big flat ears)
Im gonna get in touch with watchdog in the UK so they can push apple to sort it out and get the media involved as Apple care should be called Dont Care!

Wish I could say the same with my experience at the Apple Store last night.

The genius bar rep was polite, but stated he hadn't heard of the issue and seemed doubtful it was a problem (of any sort), since he could make the sensor go on and off with his finger. Neither did he confer with others at the store. He gave me a little grief for mentioning these posts, since as he said, that's just the opinion of "some" users.

Nonetheless, he hooked it up to his computer, and ran some diagnostics. I mentioned I just done a full restore the night before, and set it up as a new phone. He said he wished I hadn't because he was hoping to check the phone's logs of any software or application issues that may have occurred during my phone conversations to cause the problem. We also tried a few calls, but the issue couldn't be recreated. Of course, I had no problem recreating the problem after I got home.

It is obnoxious that people are getting different answers to the same problem from Apple employees.

There should be a clear directive from the top when someone comes in complaining about this issue: either it is hardware-related or it is software-related. The higher ups should have confirmed this by now. If it is hardware-related, then they should immediately replace it.

There shouldn't be this much confusion about an issue that so many people are having.

Also, it annoys me that my wife is now having to wait in line to first speak to a tech in the apple store to get a replacement phone after I already spent an hour on the phone with a tech who said she could get a replacement. They should have a way to streamline the replacement procedure if that is in fact what will fix it.

I am extremely frustrated right now.

<<<NEWS FLASH>>>

APPLE WILL NEVER ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE OR DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT UNTIL CONSUMERS START RETURNING PHONES. RETURNING DOES NOT MEAN EXCHANGING PEOPLE! I'M GIVING MINE BACK TODAY AFTER WORK WITCH MEANS IM ALSO TAKING MY $200 DOLLARS BACK. APPLE SOLD 1.7 MILLION iPHONES IN 3 DAYS? CAN WE RETURN 1 MILLION IN LESS THAN 15 DAYS? LETS GIVE IT A TRY! WAKE UP! APPLE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR PROBLEMS, THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT YOUR MONEY AND NOW THAT THEY GOT IT, THEY CAN'T HEAR YOU. WELL THEY'LL HEAR ME TONIGHT AND HOPEFULLY ALL OF YOU TOO!

LET'S ROLL!
