Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

I have to say that I am having this problem, too. I was talking to my brother, and then I couldn't hear him at all. The phone had put him on hold, and I was at my main app. screen. So I had to go back into the phone call and take the hold off. I tried playing around with this when playing my voicemails, and it seems the phone screen stays turned off ok when doing this. I even tried pressing another voicemail, as soon as I covered the proximity sensor, and it wouldn't let me. So, even with it taking two seconds to turn the display off, it seemed to me that it wasn't letting any key presses go through. Now, while talking on the phone seems to be another story. I've been using my bluetooth, mostly, but I will be playing around with this some more.

I really hope this is a software glitch of some sort. I've had every iPhone, and never had any of the problems that I've had with this one. I hope everyone keeps posting in here to share these problems.

I have to jump in to - people think I'm hanging up on them when my face pushes mute or hold. Along with the antenna issue - DID ANYONE AT APPLE TEST THE IPHONE BEFORE THEY RELEASED IT???? OR DID THEY JUST LEAVE IT UP TO SOME YOUNG DURNK GUY TRYING TO IMPRESS THE LADIES AT THE BAR THAT LEFT THE PROTOYPE ON THE STOOL FOR SOMEONE TO TAKE AND POST ON THE INTERNET???

Steve J. Stop pursuing Gizmodo and party for your security faliure and focus on fixing the iphone!!!

If the e-mail exchange Steve Jobs had with a consumer regarding the antenna issue was legit, I find Steve's last word on that issue to be insulting: "Retire, relax, enjoy your family. It is just a phone. Not worth it."

If Steve thinks that all of us are clammering over something that's "not worth it", he is sorely mistaken. Of course it's not a big deal to him -- he already has our hard-earned money (at least for the next few weeks if we start returning the phone in droves.) Steve and the rest of his team have created a device that is not a "toy" for many of us. It is an essential communication tool that allows us to stay in touch with our families, friends, and colleagues. Many of us rely on a phone to be able to get business done and make a living. No, Steve, it is NOT just a phone. It is an essential part of the way we live and do business in this day and age.

Well, it's been two days since I got rid of the leather Belkin case(which wasn't for the iPhone4 but for the 3) and I have had zero proximity sensor issues since. As I said earlier-I have had my phone since the day it came out and immediately had the same issues as most of you on here. Once I took off my leather case, the problem went away completely. I've had a rubber Belkin case on it for two days and no problems whatsoever. Hopefully you guys get the issue worked out. Those of you who still have problems-have you taken the cases off and tried to make calls with just a naked phone? Good luck

I too am having this issue. I just spoke to an Apple assistant on the phone, who claimed he hadn't heard of this before, and that he wasn't sure if it was a software fault or hardware fault. One thing he did ask was if I was using a screen protector, as that may prevent the sensor from working properly. I am reluctant to remove the screen protector I've got on, as it is that last one in a pack of 3 costing £10, because the first 2 had lots of bubbles. I was just wondering if other people can confirm they are having this problem without screen protectors?

Same problem. Everyone I know that has an i4 is hanging up on me constantly. I'm doing it to others too. It hangs up everytime you hold it with your chin or take it away from ear a few inches and put it back. Also have horrible and spuratic cell reception. My 3gs rocked everywhere in town. This one barely connects to wireless anywhere in town. Man... so disappointed.

Am having the same problem. Called Apple and they acknowledged that it's a problem with some phones. Unfortunately, "inventory" on replacement phones is so low that I cannot be guaranteed a replacement phone if I go to the Genius Bar. So, I have to ship the phone back to Apple and wait for my replacement...ugh!! Luckily, I've still got my 3GS....but it's still really frustrating!!!
