Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

I too experienced the problem 3 days after getting my 4. I also had the ring tone continuing after my call was answered, and my voice mail message continuing to play when I called back the person leaving the message. I returned the phone for a new one and 3 days later, this one is fine. I was wondering if using the speaker (even though the quality is not as desirable) when talking would avoid the issue until there is a repair??

I'm having the same issues with my phone as well. I thought I was the only one. Great I stumbled on this thread. Almost every single call I've mad, the "hold" feature has come on in the middle. Such an inconvenience. I've tried restoring my phone, hard resets, powering on and off, etc.. nothing works. Def an issue that needs to be addressed.

I've just had my iPhone 4 replaced at the Apple Store (West 14th Street, NYC). I'm waiting for it to restore before I can test the new phone's proximity sensor, but I learned a few things today that I thought I'd share:

Apple is aware of the proximity sensor issues. Josh, my Apple Store Genius, says he is hearing about them regularly, replacing phones and doing captures for diagnostic purposes. He also says several Apple Store employees have had/do have the issue with their proximity sensors. Josh claims these issues will “hopefully” be fixed by the forthcoming firmware update Apple hinted at in its PR release today.

The overall feeling from the appointment was that Apple is aware of the two biggest issues (metal band signal loss and proximity issues) and the Geniuses have been told to point to the Apple PR letter and say that a fix is “coming soon.” Which is fine, I guess, since they’re replacing phones with the proximity issue.

My new iPhone is syncing right now, so I have yet to test if it solves my issues, but here’s hoping.

I had my iPhone replaced last Saturday due to this issue (after a horrible experience at the Genius bar) and a week later I'm still hanging up on people. Extremely embarrassing to have someone call to ask how the phone is and then hang up on them twice.

I'm in the queue to get a call-back from a phone support rep, but unless this is fixed soon I'm going to have no choice but to return the phone. i use it for business, and hanging up on clients is not acceptable behavior from what's supposed to be the best "phone" out there.

Shame on Apple for this poorly-tested release, and their pompous response to issues so far. I hope the Android phones are decent.

I've had the new phone for a week and have had this happen on numerous occasions (Mute, Hold, Transfer, etc.) I just wish it would be acknowledged by Apple and to let us consumers know what to do. Either to return the phone due to a hardware issue or wait for a fix via a software update. Giving it until Sunday and making an appointment to return the phone, as I've had enough embarrassment talking with clients and hanging up on them.
